Default I think I lost Ds' Soc Sec Card...

...aside from ordering a duplicate card from Soc. Sec. Admin, what do I do?

I have the number, and I just tried that free credit report website but it wouldn't work b/c of his birth year. How do I make sure no one has stolen his "identity" or is using the number?

Or is it useless since he's so young?

Thank You.

It's definitely not useless. You can call all 3 credit bureaus and do a fraud alert notice. If anyone tries to apply for credit using his name and number, you'll be contacted to make sure it is actually your son. They may even give you a free report, but I'm not sure about that.

You aren't alone!

I did this - or it was stolen (we moved and I still wonder about one of the real estate agents who did an open house and/or the movers), but either way - it is no where to be found.

Thanks to the PP for the information about the credit bureaus - I need to do that. As for the SSA, they just say to get a new card... very helpful, huh?!

I know! At first I didn't even HAVE Ds' Soc Sec # to order a new card. Hello, I've lost the card yet you ask me for the number to order a new one?

Luckily I found the number in some other files.

LOL!!! I know! I had to call our bank to get his # - it was the only time I had ever used it!

I'm sorry this happened to you too, but I must admit to feeling so much better for not being the only one.

The Experian one was incorrect, it had a new number message which when dialed went to some type of 800# information line.

Here is the correct one, in case anyone else is trying to do this:

1 888 397 3742

It looks like experian actually has information to help parents on their phone line. But they want it in writing. sheesh.

Also, TransUnion's message said they will forward to the other bureaus.

Unfortunately so far 2 of them cannot process my request via their automated system. I wish I could get a human!! I think b/c Ds' birth year. We'll see how this goes.

Because of the risk of identity theft, its probably not unreasonable to not have a card. I don't have one, but I know my number. DS's is in the files, and I suppose I should get a locked safe box or a safety deposit box for stuff like birth certs, car titles, will, SS cards, etc.

Default Truly Free Credit Report website

I was referred to this by Experian.

https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

(however, it will not work for people under age 13)
