Thought I'd share: I've been asked to participate in a medical study

Because DS is Type 1 Diabetic and because I am pregnant, I've been approached by my pediatric endocrinologist to participate in a clinical trial regarding nutrition and possible Diabetes prevention. Evidently, they are testing to see if DHA supplementation in pregnant women and subsequent supplementation of infants helps reduce the risk of Type 1 Diabetes.

I've declined the first part of the study because it would mean I would have to stop take my Omega 3's during pregnancy in order to *possibly* be part of the active part of the trial rather than the placebo. After the birth of the baby, genetic testing will determine potential likelihood of getting Diabetes. If the baby tests positive, it will mean that I will continue to use the DHA supplements while breastfeeding.

I just thought it was interesting to see what researchers are looking at as far as developing Diabetes. While obviously the study hasn't even been concluded yet, I think just the interest in this study indicates that scientists believe Omega 3's are extremely important to include while pregnant and nursing.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I think that's a great idea. So glad to see research being done on prevention of type 1 rather than just living easier with it. DH is type 1 (23 years!), so we always wonder too...

how old was DS when he was diagnosed?

Just FYI- If you are interested, you can go to www.clinicaltrials.gov and search for type 1 diabetes, and it will pull up trials that are ongoing. It's interesting to see the wide range to things that are being explored. Several were focusing on prevention.
