Default Anyone been to Key West in late July / early August?

DH and I are considering taking a long weekend somewhere this summer and Key West really appeals to us. Anyone been in late July - early August? Is it a good time or bad time to go? TIA!

DH and I went there in August about 6 years ago. My only lasting memeory is that it SMELLED!!!! We tried to go to the beach one day and it smelled like rotten eggs and we could only handle it for about 15 minutes. I guess it was sulfer or something from out in the water.

Away from the beach it was fine, just really hot. We stayed at a great B&B (The Mermaid and the Crocidile, or something like that).

It was a nice getaway, but just make sure you go to the right beach!

My DH was in Key West two weeks before my egg retrieval last year (in August, actually), and he was MISERABLE. It is soooo hot and HUMID. Having both just gone in late February/early March for 3 blessed & saintly weeks that same year, it was quite a disappointment for him (I only saw it in peak season). I guess what's so great about Key West in the winter/spring is that it's so comfortable to be outside and have a reasonalbe warmth & sunshine...and much of the attractions are outside (Duval Street, Hemmingway House, sunsets at Mallory Square, deep sea fishing/snorkeling, eating at outdoor restaurants/bars--many of which don't air condition). Plus, it's peak hurricane season then, and while hopefully they've cleaned up a lot more than when we were there, there are still many buildings that are vacant or being rebuilt b/c of extensive storm damage from Wilma (10/05) & Rita. Our hotel 100 yards from the oceanfront had all new furniture, carpets, linens and such up to the second floor the damage was so bad. I'll just let you know that there's only a one-lane (per way) road down and one road out...and a SUPER tiny airport w/out terminals...you hop down onto the tarmac, so if there's an evacuation, it gets really dicey.

Either way, if you're used to hot & humid, go, pack shorts & tanks, and have as best a time as possible. I loved in...in the winter. ;)

Another option for the peak of summer is to go to the mountains. I can give you a stellar recommendation for the most gorgeous bed & breakfast in the Shenandoah Valley of the Blue Ridge Mts (2.5 hrs from Wash DC airport) we inned at in July. It was the perfect weather...and a gorgeous, memorable vacation. You can even ride down rafts in the slow rapids of the river at the Goshen Pass and pick fresh blackberries off the bush and fish fresh trout/bass right out of the streams...for free. Plus it's a historical mecca. Lemme know if you're interested.

I would LOVE to get that recommendation. We are in Northern Virginia so I love that we could drive there! Thanks so much!!!

August is the hottest month in South Florida. It is going to be smokin' hot. We are going in June and it is going to be bad then too. Basically any time during the "off season" (May through September) is going to be a scorcher.

We spend summers in the Carolinas and I have to second that recommendation. It's beautiful up there and the weather is like Florida during the winter.
