Default so, how are your washing machines holding up?

our washing machine is 6 yrs old. it's getting a lot more action these last 7 months since DD has arrived. the spin cycle is becoming louder and i'm hearing squeaking noises under the roar of the spin. it's still perfectly functional but i'm just wondering if this is the beginning of the end. did anyone notice their washers start to die after starting CD'ing?

Ours is about 13 years and still chugging along! :)

But, I think we are getting a new one this fall because I really want to conserve more water/energy.

Our old one is about the same age as yours. It was doing just fine, despite moving almost all the way across the country once, and then much of the way back again!

We did replace it with an HE4 after we got here. Took advantage of an offer from my parents to buy us any set we wanted as a housewarming gift... Other than our inability to put the old washer and dryer in the same place (long story), there was nothing wrong with it!

I'm noticing the same sounds you describe and wondered the same thing. Mine also seems to get stinky often - yuck :(

I'm not terribly mechanical, so take what I say with a grain (heck, a whole shaker) of salt, and this depends ont he design of your machine but I think that squeak you describe could mean that a belt is slipping. If that is what it is, it should be a relatively easy and cheap repair. My dad, who is handy, replaced their old washing machine's belts whenever they wore out.
