Default SERGERS - anyone have one? recommendations?

I'm thinking about getting a serger. I really like sewing with my sewing machine - but I'm not so great with knits. Everyone says it's so much easier with a serger - but I really don't know much about what to buy. Does anyone have any recommendations? what brands? features to look for?

I don't want to spend more than about $500 - and I'd prefer something closer to $300, since I'm not sure I'd use it that much. But, I know you often get what you pay for.

Thanks in advance, Amy

I have a Brother 929D I bought at Walmart a couple of years ago.It was only $250 I think and I have been very happy with it.Keep in mind I haven't had a lot of time to use it but I think it works well and the price was right.

My mom and Mil are sewing fiends and they both own Bernina's. I think they are fairly pricey but if you are going to be sewing alot then it is probably worth the price.

I have a Janome I got at the local sewing machine shop for $400. I love it. I know that Amber of Darling Diapers burned thru about 3 Walmart sergers in the first year or so, so I was glad I got mine thru a real 'store' that can do repairs if such a need should arise. :D

I have a 2/3/4 thread Kenmore that I have had for several years. I think it is the #02016655000. It has never ever given me problems. It gets checked occasionally. It does a rolled hem and has differential feed.

I also have the Bernina 1300 DC. I like it alot, but it really does a lot more than most people need, and was a lot more expensive than the budget you mention.

I've got a Bernina 800DL. Love it love it love it! I am quite sure it was around $500.
