Want to make something for my son on the way

I want to make something for my son who is due Sept. 25th. I am generally creative but am having trouble coming up with something. Any ideas? I would like to say, yeah mommy made you that. I dunno maybe an easy quilt, clothing, Christmas stocking or something but I don't have any easy patterns. Any ideas? Please help. I am getting antsy and need to creativly vent. I will also be a SAHM so this could also be a long term project. :O)

I can sew pretty well on a machine, would like to learn to knit and can follow easy instructions. :O)

Blankets are easy to sew. I like ones with a cute flannel on one side and terrycloth on the other side. Just make them roughly square, the width of the fabric. Sew wrong sides together, turn and topstitch. I usually then sew a couple lines across the center to keep them together.

If you want to learn to knit, an easy blanket is a good first project. This is similar to the one I learned on: http://www.nakedsheep.com/en8hourafpat.html It will take more than 8 hours for a beginner, though.

I love the faux-chenille flannel blankets. You take 5-6 layers of flannel and sew a line every 1/2". Then you cut through the top 4-5 layers (don't cut the bottom layer) between each row of stitches. Put on a binding and then toss it in the wash.

They also sell a special rotary cutter that should speed it up for about $30 but it definitely isn't necessary.

We received one when DD was born and it is just so pretty. They aren't difficult just a little tedious.

You can never have too many baby blankets, but frankly, I find the low-work ones are better. I crocheted a baby afghan (what was I thinking?) which DD now kind of likes, but the big hits have been fleece blankets (umm, actually, she's really happy with ones made by taking a piece of fleece and cutting off any weird edges, although I have a fringed one she likes too) and flannel blankets (piece of quilting cotton, piece of flannel, sew around edges leaving space to turn, turn, sew around edge with decorative stitch (good time to try out those trains/flowers/bunnies if your machine does them), sew around again as far in as you can easily get and keep it even, done).
