I keep reading/hearing different conflicting things on this. To further complicate matters there are jarred baby foods that have corn in them but I *thought* corn can be an allergen? Also this morning when I dropped off DS at daycare they had corn on the menu for one day & I marked that off as a "No" because I had thought I needed to wait on it. Same thing with eggs - I've heard mixed things & I've actually given DS scrambled eggs w/cheese (bad mommy) but my DH & I made them one morning & he was literally grabbing them off our plates & loves them. Neither DH nor I have any food allergies so I'm hoping I haven't damaged DS any!

Technically, they're not supposed to have egg whites till they're 12m old. The yolks are OK though. Even if he's had them, I'd hold off continuing since continued exposure can lead to an allergy down the road.
The last thing you want is an egg allergy since it can affect immunizations. As far as corn goes, I didn't realise it was a potential allergen, either. I just held off because I thought it was a choking hazard. We did give Sophie cornbread (no solid pieces of corn) before a year old and she loved it. Better safe than sorry, KWIM? -m

Thanks Marisa -
maybe the corn thing is more a choking hazard & not an allergen? Like I said I feel like I've read/heard so much conflicting advice half the time I can't keep it all straight in my head.... I probably should just call my ped's office but then it seems like my ped tells me one thing & my neighbor's ped says another & a co-workers ped says another - ahhh! I guess no more scrambled eggs for the G-man then! I've never really understood that whole thing w/immunizations & egg allergy in that they'll give the flu shot to babies who are older then 6 months but less then a year but yet eggs can be an allergen, so couldn't the flu shot potentially cause an egg allergy down the road as well? or maybe there isn't enough of it in the shot to be a problem? Marisa - are you going to posting up until Sophie's arrival?! :) |

I gave an egg yolk (no whites) at around 10 or 11 months, and since he turned 1 yr I've given him whole eggs (scrambled w/ cheese) a couple times.
From what I've read, corn is ok at 12 months. I still haven't given straight-up corn. Starting at about 10 months, I gave DS Veggie Booty, which have corn as an ingredient. He's had a few bites of a corn tortilla. I'd feel comfortable giving him corn now that he;s 1 year, but just haven't had an occassion to yet. I posted the high allergen food list at wholesomebabyfood.com on my frig as a reminder. Here's the link http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/solids.htm Lydia Mama to Santiago, born 11/16/03 |

1 year on both.
I like these websites for current guidelines on introducing foods as they are very well-researched: http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/solids.htm http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/index.html Anna Mama to Gracie (Sept '03) |

Thanks Anna & Lydia too - for the info & links. I'm going to print out a list now & post it to fridge (why I never thought of that myself?!)
I just recently started giving him Veggie Booty myself & had no problems there. |

I'll be posting up till Thursday afternoon when I get admitted ;)
It's my understanding that many immunizations are grown in chicken embryos/eggs and that is how there can be some sort of an issue with egg allergies. This parent crap is so confusing sometimes :P. -m

Steph, corn is on the list of most allergenic foods on the Wholesomebabyfood site.
For eggs, they recommend the yolks as being great for baby, but to avoid the whites until after a year old. I'm planning on hardboiling a few eggs and giving her the yolks this week. Marisa, how are you feeling this close to Amelia's arrival?! ETA: Oops, I didn't read the OP's replies, so I just gave you duplicate info. Anyway, this adventure into solids is a lot of fun, isn't it? :) Eileen Mother of Beautiful Kaya, www.chemicalgraphics.com/kaya http://www.babysfirstsite.org/newtic...4.birthday.png http://www.gynosaur.com/assets/ribbo...n_amber_9m.gif Breastfed 9 months and counting |
