Default a few general questions about baby food

I have 2 questions: Are baby food cookbooks worth the money? What do they discuss?

Also, I read in 2 places that certain vegetables you shouldn't make your own baby food from, the most notable being carrots. It said something about that baby food companies screen vegetables for nitrates, and only make their food from veggies without nitrates. Is this correct, or is this a piece of misinformation? I assume that I could get around this buy buying organic carrots?

Oh, one more question...a while ago, someone posted a list of fruits and veggies that you should DEFINETLY buy organic. Anyone remember what was on that list?

Thanks again!

The nitrates come from the soil itself, so buying organic doesn't help. After 8 months, baby is able to properly process the nitrates and it is no longer an issue. We didn't even start solids until 8.5 months so it never was an issue for us.

I have Super Baby Foods by Yaron and while it is informative, I am glad I bought it off swap. I think if you could get a copy at the library that would be sufficient. It helped a lot on what I needed to get started, how to freeze the food economically, and just some general info that I found helpful. I usually refer to http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/ for when to introduce food and how to prepare the food. That site also has info about nitrates.

I have that link to what you should buy organic saved on my other computer so if no one else posts it, just bump this back up to remind me in the next couple of days. :)

I remember reading (I think in Superbaby food) that one should always buy organic bananas because the antifungal spray on regular bananas isn't good for babies.

I agree with pp... that the website (she posted) is great for info and recipes. i have several books, but use the info from the site most often. one of the books i have will be good for later on... creative combo's and presentation ideas.

I don't buy organic... I do wash my produce, but being a farmer's daughter, I'm not afraid of the chemicals used on produce grown in the usa... i always wonder, when the produce is from an outside country, but here in this country the rules and regulations farmers must follow are very strict. I do try to buy locally grown produce as often as possible!
