My niece is 11 weeks old, and SIL is starting to introduce formula because she returns to work after Labor Day and the baby will be FF at daycare. She has been BF exclusively until now, with the exception of a bit of formula that the nurses gave her in the hospital after she was born. They had a bunch of sample bottles of that stuff laying around, so that is what they were going to use since they had some already. It is Enfamil Lipil, but it doesn't look exactly like the picture on the Enfamil website, it also says 'DHA-ARA' on the label.
This weekend, a bunch of us were at our beach house and SIL had to leave early to go home, leaving BIL to care for the babe. SIL left some EBM but when that ran out BIL gave her some formula. About three hours after she was fed, she threw up. Not just spit up, but major yucky puke, all over herself, the Primo Viaggo, everywere (and in the middle of a restaurant). A few minutes later (after she had been all cleaned up, of course) she threw up a bunch more. BIL said she had done this once before after having the formula. Most likely she wasn't sick, since it happened two separate times. She never has a problem with BM, nurses like a champ. So is it the Enfamil? I suggested that they maybe try a different formula. It seemed a little odd, though, that she got sick so long after she was fed. Has anyone else had this problem? TIA, Sarah |

I would have to say it probably was the introduction of something completely new to a 11w baby, not specifically the enfamil lipil, anything besides bm likely would have made her ill.
Maybe a gradual change would be much easier? Maybe 1/4 formula to 3/4 bm a few times over a few weeks then 1/2 and 1/2 during the same time period so its easier than an abrupt change. ff babies usually do a gradual change too. I hope they're able to find something that works for them during the few times they use formula

Thanks, Jos. I should have remembered about the gradual change method. Poor little thing probably isn't ready for anything besides Mom's milk.
Any idea of how to suggest this to my SIL without sounding like a total know-it-all who is trying to tell her how to feed her kid? It is her first baby so she does accept suggestions a little easier, but since I don't have kids of my own yet, my credibility is kind of low. Any articles about this I could send her? Sarah |

I can't think of any articles specifically, more like "mommy advice" I've heard online. Maybe something like "I've heard of ppl doing this:". Sorry I couldn't suggest something more. I hope everything works out, you're a nice sil for trying to help.

if she wants to try different formula you might suggest Good Start Supreme with the DHA/ARA. It is supposed to be easier on their tummies cause the protein is more broken down and it is Whey Protein instead of Casein (I think)!
Good Luck to her! ~Tondi Mommy to Mason 7/8/01 and Aidan 5/4/05 |
