I need all the tips you have, PLEASE! There goes my breakfast (cereal) and lunch (yogurt or cottage cheese). I have to eliminate dairy from my diet COMPLETELY for 2 weeks. Ped did mention that I can drink Lactaid, but need to take Lactaid pills when I do. Should I shop at Whole Foods or TJ's? Does anyone know of surprising things I can't have anymore... or that I can? I know there is a wealth of info out there, but I do't know where to start? Are there books or websites to read?
Thanks so much!

Julie~ here are a couple of threads for you. I did a search for "dairy free diet" and came up with more, but DD needs my attention now.

This page has a great list of "hidden" allergen ingredients. Some will be a bit of overkill for you, such as not buying lunchmeat if they slice cheese on the same slicer, but the list of ingredients will help.
http://allergyadvisor.com/hidden.htm I'm not sure why they would recommend Lactaid - it is milk just without lactose?? Since there is lots of lactose in BM, it doesn't make sense. I would switch to rice or soy milk for the two weeks to make sure. See this site for more on lactose and dairy sensitivity while BF: http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns...nsitivity.html TJs has a list in their store of products which are milk/dairy free. Don't know about Whole Foods. Hope this helps - mine always get really gassy/fussy when I have milk (usually ice cream or milkshakes) but are OK with cheese. They outgrew it at about 8 months. It may be a sensitivity, and not a true allergy if you are lucky! |

My DD is dairy-intolerant, but the lactose was okay for her. I had to give up *any* dairy, including foods that have whey or casein, even if they were the last ingredient on the list.
I survived for 10 months on pop tarts and Chinese food and I had to get soy versions of everything. (Soy burgers good. Soy cheese BAD.) When I finished BFing, I went to Fuddrucker's and got myself a huge cheeseburger and milkshake! :) Just read all the ingredients lists very carefully. Organic/health food stores or sections in your supermarket have a lot of new and innovative foods that are dairy/lactose free. It's surprising! DD likes Van's natural waffles and they're wheat free, egg free, dairy free... It's a wonder that they taste good, even to me! |
