My daughter is 8 months old and beginning to express interest in self feeding by grabbing the spoon and helping us to guide it into her mouth. Curious if anyone has tried the lil' dipper by Gerber and whether they would recommend it or not?
Thanks in advance for any advice you may have! Karin |

We have one that never gets used. We let her try it a few fimes but she did just as well with a spoon. We're currently using the Take 'N Toss toddler sized ones with quite a bit of luck. Just give her a spoon and let her play with it...even as young as she is.

We have them and ds will use them. We have given him a spoon before, but he tends to shove the handle of the spoon down his throat--so fast that we're lunging at him to get it back. With the Li'l Dipper, the handle is nice and fat and easy for him to grab--plus, there's no long skinny handle to shove down his throat!! :)

I wouldn't get them. We did try them but they weren't a big hit. DD would discard the dipper and use her fingers most of the time.
Now DD much prefers the spoon and fork set with the big handle instead. (also by gerber) Christy Maddy born 06/09/04 http://lilypie.com/baby2/040609/3/4/0/-5/.png Little Peanut due 03/02/06 http://bd.lilypie.com/K8fum4/.png |

We tried them and quickly discarded them in favor of toddler utensils.

We've tried it, and it might work better with other foods, but applesauce...not so good. And that's the only spoon-fed thing (besides tiny tastes of mama's ice cream) that Carrie will allow past her lips anymore, even if she's doing it herself.
The spoons with the big curved handles that have holes in them work really well for us. (I just checked - they're "less mess" toddler spoons by Sassy - http://www.baby-wise.com/product_inf...roducts_id=124) Sarah :)

I'd say it was an expensive paint brush. ;) DD1 would immediately play with it vs. regular toddler utensils which she'd at least try to use before switching to her fingers.
The Take & Toss utensils are a favorite in our house. Jennifer Mommy to Annalia 3/03 Sophia 6/05 When raising kids the days are oh so long, but the years are short.--John Leguizamo |

Another vote for not getting them. They seem like a good idea, but DD really never used them.
take and toss spoons worked up so much better. Caroline Kaylin 6/5/04 http://b2.lilypie.com/9KMlm7/.png[/img] |

Thanks everyone for the advice! I think maybe I'll try the take and toss spoons!
