Default Candy Overload and it's not even Easter!!!

I don't know about you guys but I think I am down sizing the candy that is going in my DC Easter baskets. Between preschool and the neighborhood, we have been on 3 Egg hunts and already have more candy than we need. Everytime I turn around someone has a handful of jellybeans or I'll see the remnants of a peep on the corner of their little mouths They are clutching these eggs like their lives depend on them!

I have always been pretty liberal about letting my DC have candy, but wow, it's out of control!!!

Ha! I know. My dd cried the whole way home last week when her eggs didn't contain candy. It was only her second egg hunt.

I totally agree. Maybe it's because we have a 10-day-old, which has left my three-year-old dealing with enough of an adjustment as it is, but with the addition of the grandparents and other relatives giving him whatever he wants, plus the school candy and the neighborhood candy... OMG, MAKE IT STOP! I miss my sweet, happy boy, and I could do without the whiny, candy spoiled tantrum thrower that replaced him this week.

I decided to really go light on the candy this year. I went to an upscale candy store and picked out a small bag of jelly beans and 2 small chocolate pieces. None for dh and I. I asked my mom not to give us any candy b/c she gives so, so much to all of us and it's usually pretty crappy (PHOs, weird flavors...I get the feeling that she shops the day before and everything is picked over ). I have been accumulating candy from all the holidays for the past 2 years and finally chucked it all this week. I had a paper grocery bag filled. I usually dumped it in there "just in case after a week or so after the holiday. I just don't need or want that around anymore. We'll see if my mom listens.

Thankfully ds' school has a no food as treats policy for holidays so he didn't get anything there. Next week, for some strange reason, is the egg hunt in our neighborhood and I know he'll get some junk there.

I'm trying to figure out how to make less candy seem like more to DD! lol I picked up quite a bit of non-candy stuff for the eggs, but DD definitely thinks that the Easter Bunny brings candy. I'm not quite sure where she picked that up, but we *will* be putting candy in some eggs this year.

We had an egg hunt today at the sitter's block party, but I wasn't sure what time the egg hunt was - before or after lunch. I was waiting for DH to get home with my stepdaughters, so we were about 45 minutes late. We missed the egg hunt. At first, I was very disappointed as I think DD would have had a great time running around with her little friends looking for eggs.
BUT...when I saw all that crappy candy the kids had, I was rather relieved that we missed it. Some of the other parents gave her a few eggs and that was enough. I threw half of it in the garbage already. Then, there was a pinata and DD picked up *20* lollipops! She's been playing with them and clinging to them like they are gold - lol.

I'm also trying to make less seem like more and will likely recycle some of the candy she got today into her Easter basket. She definitely expects eggs and candy. I couldn't get enough when I was a kid, but now as I Mom, I really try to limit the sugar!

I know what you mean! DD is "just" getting a pair of chocolate ballet slippers and some Calico Critters bunnies in her basket this year, but the Easter Bunny just dropped by and hid several plastic eggs with black jelly beans in them for her to find. (DD must have picked up the black jelly bean fiend gene from my dad.)

My problem is that, well, being pg, every time I went to the store I bought more jelly beans, dove dark chocolate eggs, peeps...there is way too much sugar in the house right now. I don't even really like sweets that much. But now I have to either toss it all or eat it when DD can't see me.

And then there are the cookies. We baked 18 dozen cookies yesterday with my brother, iced them today, and will bring them to our big family celebration tomorrow, but between DD and my brother (and DH!) and I we've probably downed a couple dozen already...

I think I should go brush my teeth again!

Sarah
