Default Decorating advice for big girl room?

I need a quick opinion from you all.

DD#1 and DD#2 are in separate rooms, across the hall from each other. For now, we plan on keeping them in separate rooms, though we have considered putting them in the same room either down the road or when we move into a new house.

DD#1 has the Ikea Hemnes bedroom set in white (twin bed, nightstand, which is no longer made, and 3 drawer dresser).

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S59848058

She has this duvet cover in the red/pink: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60124229

We already have the white Hemnes nightstand for DD#2 (purchased it when they discontinued it) and will get her the same bed and same dresser, all once she's out of her crib.

My question is, should the duvet covers match? I got DD#2 the same duvet cover yesterday, but in the blue. The website color isn't a great match -- its a turquoise blue with light blue swirls. Quite pretty. I don't like the green, so that's not an option.

DH thinks I should take it back and get another red/pink one for DD#2, so they match exactly.

Currently, DD#2's room (nursery) is painted light green, with a high chair rail (3/4 way up wall) and light blue above that. So, the blue would go, but so would the red/pink.

Thoughts?

So they are the same pattern just different colors? I think that sounds good!

ETA- since they are in separate rooms it really doesn't matter and if they do share eventually I think different is fine so long as they don't clash horribly.

Yup, exactly the same pattern -- DD#1s is red/pink (looks more fuschia to me) and DD#2s is bright blue (looks turquoise). IMO, they are more girly patterns with the swirls and all. But, DH thought that if we had the beds in the same room, they should be the same color. I dunno.

I suck at decorating!

Just a thought, but the red/pink you bought a while back may not match (exactly) the one you may buy tomorrow b/c of the dye lot issue.

You could ask DD#1 how she feels about it. Could be interesting to hear her opinion.

AND...if you kept the different colors, would you have a harder time adding any accessories later b/c of the different colors? You know, like, "I need a ____(rug, valance, lamp, etc) with THIS red and THIS blue, not THAT blue and THIS red."

I like the ones you picked!

Hmm, good point. They look the same, but you're right, could be different dye lots.

LOL, if I ask DD#1, she will most definitely say they need to match exactly. She's into matching clothes with DD#2. But, I don't see that lasting forever (thankfully, its costing me a mint!), KWIM?

I like the idea of other accessories -- I could do a blue rug/blue lamp for DD#1 and pink rug/lamp for DD#2 to tie it all together.... DD#1 already has blue and pink sheers in her room (sounds horrid, but looks quite cute and princessy).

Hey, maybe I can make this work!

I think same-pattern-but-different-colors sounds adorable! That is sort of what we are doing for our DDs, whose rooms share a jack-n-jill bath: DD1's room is periwinkle and green, and DD2's room is (going to be) light pink and green. The bath is green. I came very close to getting them same-pattern-but-different-colors bedding, too, but I ended up finding different things for each that I liked too much to pass up. I love what you're doing!

Also, if you were to move or combine their rooms down the road, they may want a new look anyway, so I would focus more on what looks good now than what may happen down the road. And as much as I LOVE matching my girls' clothes, I like the idea of their rooms looking a little more individual so they don't feel like we think of them as one in the same, kwim? The different colors is great for this.

I *heart* jack-n-jill bathrooms! We would love that down the road, if we ever find that in a new house!

Yeah, I'm leaning more towards coordinating than matching, with everyone's help her -- I think I can make it work!

DD#1 has this lamp in her room (on the dresser, beside the glider)
http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/s...k=P_PartNumber

She also has a Tinkerbell lamp on her nightstand. DH broke the glass shade, so I have to get something to replace Tinkerbell (and the whole @#$%^ room is decorated with Tinkerbell removeable stick-ons on the walls, I'm none too happy with DH about that!).

I'm thinking I should get another of the pink lamps, so that they could have a matching set on nightstands if we go that route.

There's also this lamp, in fuschia and blue:

Hmmmm. So many decisions, LOL!

Those lamps are cute and fun, although pretty expensive...ok, well, maybe not compared to the PBK touch lamps I ended up with. I personally might lean toward something I could just change the shade on.

Just curious, but would your DC go "that's a boy's lamp/cover" blah blah blah? DD has been wearing gender neutral anything I can find/stand. Suddenly, she points out the boy's bikes in the paper vs. the girls' bikes and won't wear the GN HA t's and shorts I just got her. grrr...

Well, Disney Princesses and Dora rule (currently), and I will admit that most of their wardrobe(s) are anything but GN. I picked really basic bedding because it was cheaper and I didn't want characters. I thought I could live with stick-on characters on the wall (that could be changed easily), rather than a honkin' huge Dora head on the bedding, KWIM?

I think DD#1 would be OK with the blue lamp, I have to check it out IRL, though. I know she likes the light pink crystal-ly one that she already has, which is why I might just get a 2nd of those. My thoughts are they would each have the pink lamp on their dresser, and they they would need bedside lamps. I doubt I'll find a matching Tinkerbell one (and, like I said, the existing one has a non-existent shade now), so I'd probably get 2 new nightstand lamps. G-d help me, I might end up with Princess ones. Sigh.
