Default Mormon Temple vs Church

Can someone tell, link or pm me what the difference is? Finding accurate information online sometimes difficult.
TIA

This is going to be a pretty vague reply, but the way I understand it is that the temple is reserved only for certain members who- I can't remember the term, but they must meet certain requirements. If you do not meet said requirements, you can not go in.

The churches are open though.

Thank you so much! The kids are studying ancient temples, and there is a large Mormon population here (and a temple). The adults wondered what exactly a Mormon temple was, and you never know what the kids are going to say so it is better to be prepared.
