Hard mattress - add a Mattress topper?

I bought Alek a hard mattress. He doesn't like it that much. I was thinking of getting him a new mattress but then thought maybe I should get some kind of topper, memory foam? featherbed thing to put on top of the mattress to make it feel nicer for him....

Any experience with these and what do you recommend? Thanks!

I think a topper would work.
Things to consider:

Toppers are pricey (for a good one) so it may not save much over getting a new mattress.

If you get a soft mattress be careful not to go too soft. We made that mistake and ended up having to buy a firmer bed.
