I'm probably late to the party, but I finally figured out how to enjoy iced coffee without spending a fortune. I brew it in my regular coffee maker using double the coffee. Transfer to pitcher in fridge and I'm one happy camper. Using twice the coffee keeps it from getting watery with the ice. Just wanted to share

I will keep that in mind for this summer. Thanks for the tip! BTW, do you add cream and sugar before putting in the fridge?

ahh then you'll love this:
http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/08/co...d-iced-coffee/ cold brewed without a Toddy and even more rounded, rich than the hot brewed stuff. |

I don't know whether to thank you both for posting this, or not. I've kicked the iced coffee habit for the most part, but to be able to make tasty iced coffee at home...I think I'm in trouble.

I just read the recipe at the link you provided and that method is very similar to the Toddy cold brew system. The smitten one is probably easier than Toddy if you're making a small amount, and the Toddy is probably easier for large batches. I use 1lb of coffee at a time so the Toddy works well, though I do dread making it every week. |

I'm curious to compare both methods as in this article,
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/06/st...0coffee&st=cse someone mentions that the toddy filter actually takes away some of the oils which are so flavorful in the cold brew method. The original NY Times article makes 1/2 gallon and if you use a stockpot you can make as much as you'd like as well. I'm not a coffee drinker but in talking with my mom about this method we both agreed it's likely that the cold brew would taste like one expects when you SMELL coffee brewing. |

I had never heard of the Toddy system before, but just looked it up. I might try the hand sieve method first. I have an iced decaf mocha problem. It's bad enough that my kids can order for me. I'd save a fortune making them at home!

I agree with the pp's that suggested cold brew for iced coffee. The only way to go.
