we prefer the tri tip roast (as opposed to the tri tip steaks). i marinate the roast with a bottle of Lawry's Steak & Chop or Signature Steakhouse in a gallon ziplock for as long as possible. then i cook in a HOT oven (can't remember exactly how long, about 15 minutes i think).

Yep, tri tip is really meant to be cooked as a roast. Then you can make Santa Maria Tri Tip! The best EVER!

Thank you both! Good ideas for next time
last night we sprinkled generously with fresh ground pepper and Johnny's and grilled them and they turned out wonderfully. DD ate a ton, exclaiming "I really love this steak!!!" several times.
