Default Are Ikea expedit bookshelves a pain to assemble?

I am going to stage two of our huge organizing project, and for this I need a bookshelf with some doors and open shelves. Expedit seems like a good value so I'm considering it, but we're not very handy. will this be a nightmare?

We bought a nice set from Scandinavian Designs, the "high-end Ikea"

The pieces came with hardware screwed in, so we just had to put it together and tighten it... still not easy since it was a huge unit, but doable. I don't want to spend that much on the study so I'm looking into Ikea instead. The unit will hold boxes, baskets and books.

I am on a roll nowadays, so I want to keep going before I lose momentum!!

Any thoughts?

Took Dh and I about 30 minutes to assemble a 5x5 Expedit. He secured to the wall with thick "L" brackets from the hardware store and that thing is solid as a rock.

Totally easy, but it does take two people. I did the 2 x 4 in 20 minutes or so once I got my father to come over and hold pieces in place for me. The time is more just making sure the pieces are in tightly. This does not include anchoring though. My father came over and did that for us another time so I don't know how long it took.

Depends what kind of help you have. DH and DS have been working on assembling 3 MALM dressers/nightstands for three days now! LOL!

I did the 4x4 by myself. My worst boo boo was not giving myself enough room to spread out. But, it isn't hard.

I had to wait until my husband got home to stand it up. It is HEAVY.

I assembled a 2x4 Expedit by myself. I had one piece backwards, so had to take it apart after it was almost all together, but I think it still took me less than an hour.

Thanks! That does make them more appealing. I'd heard horror stories about Ikea assembly.

I bought one (5x5) used, so I still had to assemble it, but some of the more tedious work (putting in all of those wood dowel pegs!) had already been done. It was not terrifically hard, but if you buy a unit bigger than the new 2x2s, you'll need help to assemble it. I love EXPEDIT and would love to buy additional units.

I put a 4x4 together by myself and it took me over an hour but there were several interruptions from my kids while I was working. I have a 2x4 to put together, but based on this post, I will wait till dh can help me and maybe it will go faster this time. We plan to buy a 5x5 for the family room as soon as it is finished.

The only time I put the 5x5 together it was a hige pain to get the last corner lined up. My friend and I did the rest quickly, but the lasty corner just wouldn't line up. DH came by with a mallet and applied a twist to it and it come together. It seemed like it was just luck on whether it was at a proper angle when the last piece came together. We weren't lucky and I have shyed away from Expedit ever since. I have never had a minute's trouble with any other Ikea pieces so maybe I just had bad luck.
