We used to buy the cases of Poland Springs water at Costco to have in the house. It was convenient to take on the go etc. Since we moved and got a new fridge with filtered water I stopped buying the water (accept for large parties) to save the Earth and some money. I use a Kleen Kanteen for DD and I to take water out of the house.
The other day BIL was over and went in the fridge and took a bottle (we had a few left from a party). After he finished the two that we had he asked about more. I told him that we have water from the fridge and offered him a glass. He balked at it and said he was fine. I thought that was weird. FWIW they drink strictly from a Brita at home, they don't have bottles there. So is it "nicer" to have individual bottles for everyone or is offering a drink from your own brita or the fridge filter OK? Last edited by alien_host; 07-01-2009 at 05:21 PM. |

I think that it is "much nicer" to be offered a cold glass of filtered ice water (fridge or otherwise) than a plastic bottle, unless your water tastes bad. My mother's filtered tap water tastes awful so they only offer bottled.

We don't buy bottled water (unless we are having a party) so everyone at our house is offered water from our Brita. I've never had anyone refuse and I'm not sure how I'd take it if they did. Many of our friends have fridges with filtered water and that is what we drink when we visit them. I never though twice about it.
I don't think there is anything at all "not nice" about not having individual bottles for guests.

If we're having a large group over, we'll have bottled water just b/c bottles are easier to pass out and label.
For normal visitors and playdates, we offer filtered water from the fridge door. That's what we normally drink and it tastes fine. For some reason, it greatly annoys me when my mom is visiting and goes to the garage fridge to get a bottle of water. She'll go through several bottles and we don't use bottles when a glass is a viable alternative. We should probably just get rid of the bottles altogether....

yeah, that. (I don't know how to do smilies). I use a sharpie and mark the bottles with the kids names for large parties. Playdates are small enough we can keep track of whose glass is whose.

Our water tastes great here, straight from the tap. It is all we have, so it is all I offer. We have an ice maker inside the freezer if people want ice, which I offer. No one has ever balked at my water.
I refuse to buy water unless I am really in an emergency situation or don't have a choice.

We don't buy bottled water ever (even for parties), so if you come to our house, you get water from the tap and ice (made from tap water) from the freezer.

I don't buy bottled water and I no longer own a water filter so tap water is what people get. I have labeled cups before for parties and playgroup- just as easy as labeling bottles of water.

We usually have pellegrino or some other carbonated water in the summer-- that and from the fridge (filtered twice) but both in a glass... no individual bottles.
