I currently have a chicco keyfit car seat that I have installed with LATCH in the center seat. After browsing some posts it looks like that is a no no for my car. Is that true that my prius' LATCH is for the outboard seats and not the center? If that is the case, which is better/safer: center seat with a seatbelt or outboard with LATCH? Thanks for your help! I really want to make sure she is as safe as possible!

How many latch connectors do you see? What does your manual say about it? Most cars don't allow center installs using latch.
Either way is safe as long as you have a solid install. Either way is any better. Many people find latch to be easier to do. But with pratice both ways are easy. |

The safEST is center with the seatbelt if you can get a good install there. Outboard is bit less safe, but a rear-facing carseat in the back seat is very, very safe. Luckily the KeyFit is easy-peasy to install with the seatbelt, so if you want to keep her center it shouldn't be a big deal. Just read the manual and try it a few times. It will be good to learn anyway in case you ever need to install it in a car that doesn't have LATCH.

We made the same mistake with our Pilot with our Marathon as we just assumed that you could latch a seat in the middle because of the way the connectors are spaced and it worked. It doesn't even say in the manual that you can't so I didn't find out that was wrong until a month or so ago when Jools pointed that out. That seat hadn't been latched in the center though for over two years though as we ended up prefering using the seat belt method.
