Default Another option for counseling?

DH and I have both agreed that we need to see a marital counselor, but do not have the funds, nor does insurance cover it. What are some other options for helping get our marriage back on track? Anyone BTDT?

Thanks!

Do you have an EAP through work? Most cover 3-8 visits with a counselor for things like this.

Not sure where you live but here are some things to check out. First, often times therapists will work on a sliding scale if you can show that there is a financial need. Some therapists will work with you on a payment schedule. Also, if you live near a large university, sometimes there are studies on therapy being conducted. When I was in graduate school, we did such a study and people received almost 5 months of therapy for free. HTH!

Does your insurance cover individual therapy? Is there a way to go to couples therapy with an MD rather than counselor in order to get your insurance to pay?

I'm sorry you're in such a rough situation. No BTDT, but I hope you are able to figure out a good solution. This is too important not to get the help you need to put things back on track. All the best?

Are you active in a church or synagog? Most religious leaders have training in marital counseling. I have also heard good things about Dr. Phil's Family Matter book. It has activities that you do with your husband. If you go to a big book store and look through the self help section I'm sure there are several marital counseling type books, you might find one you want to try.

You can also ask churches. Some church leaders have training in counseling. Can be awkward if you're not of the same religious affiliation, but you can at least check and see how they are and how "pushy" they are about it.
