Question Remind me when kids get opinionated

about what they wear?! I'm thinking of buying DD a Halloween costume on clearance on Sunday or later, and wondering if it's a bad idea. She turned 1 this month, so she'll be 2 next Halloween, and as this is our first kid, I don't know when they go through certain stages. I've heard they'll want to start picking out their own clothes and objecting to certain clothes & costumes, so I'm just wondering when it all happens. Is it safe to assume I can get another year out of her of buying her clothes used or on sale ahead of time without her fussing ?

Thanks!

At 13 months DD would cry when I dressed her but not when DH dressed her because he let her choose what to wear. I don't think that's typical though!

Buy it! Even if you don't use it for Halloween it is great to build up a dress up trunk. I always buy on clearance for dress up purposes- hats, costumes, accessories...

It depends on the kid, DS just started taking an interest in what he wears and he's nearly 5. As PP said, it can't hurt to have it in the dress up collection if the price is right. Depending on the brand they also sell well in September.

I think it depends on the child. My child is 3.5 and doesn't care what she wears at this point. I may ask her if she wants to wear pants or a dress, or shirt x or Y, but I haven't gotten any push at this point. I also picked out her Halloween costume this year and she didn't care about that either. I think this is the last year I will get away with it though. My niece on the other hand has had an active hand in shopping for her clothes since she was 2. She is very opinionated and absolutely won't wear anything she hasn't personally picked out.

If it is a good price on clearance, I might go for it. You might be able to steer her a little bit still next year.

Ah, I read these posts and am so jealous! My 2 1/2 year old DD has had an opinion since she was about 26 months old. And it's a FIGHT at times - I've bought all of these sweet, cute clothes, many on clearance from last season, and she wants to wear the same 3 outfits every day. Right now, she has decided she doesn't want to wear any costume for Halloween, so we'll see what happens on Saturday. So, my advice would be to just buy whatever is cheap enough that it's not the end of the world if she doesn't wear it.

I agree to but it for dress-up. The best thing I ever did one year was buy a ton of costumes at the Disney Store in post Halloween clearance. I have gotten WAY more use out of them in play value than as Halloween costumes! Although I have used them for that too. It's nice having a full "arsenal"of costumes to choose from.
