for the first couple of months? assuming pampers swaddlers type diapes....
w/dd I started cd when she was 5-6mo. So I have virtually nill in terms of nb diapers. I have os pockets but my friend is borrowing them and I know they wont fit an itty bitty well. I have 8pf and 2 covers. Should I buy a dozen pf and a couple more covers to tide me over till baby fits into some bigger diapers? or just do sposies till it grows some? typically, I do cloth during the day and sposies at night or when traveling (not day outtings). I have 1 case of size 2 and 1 case of size 1-2 sposies but no nb. baby is due on Monday. Maybe I should wait and see how big it is before deciding? this is the last baby and I'm trying to figure out whats most cost efficient..... |

I would wait on diapers and not buy anymore. I wouldn't open what you have either. I'd get a pack of newborn diapers- even my 9lb 9oz boy wore those for a few weeks. Reassess after a few weeks. I can't remember how much we spent. I think we probably had 6-7 diaper changes/ day in the early weeks.

I've found prefolds useful in the newborn stage and then they can work as stuffing for pocket dipes, etc. down the road. So yeah, I'd personally pick up a few more but I didn't mind prefolds in the early weeks w/ my previous two kids. You can also trifold prefolds in a cover once they are past the tremendously explosive newborn poop stage. That option was helpful for us when we were getting low on dipes close to wash day.
One thing I've done this time is to look at a few dipes w/ a little more longevity vs. true newborn dipes (but without going to one size dipes which I'm not a huge fan of personally). For example, I really liked muttaqin newborn dipes when DD was a newbie. Now there are "babyshape mutts" in a medium, and from what I've read and pics I've seen, these fit newborns pretty well. I ordered some for this baby and they aren't much different in size from the newborn size, but should last longer (hold more pee than newborn mutts and should get us through more than a month or two). They don't have the umbilical snapdown that the newborn mutts have but otherwise are quite similar IMO in size. I'm in the same boat...we've CD'd two kids but some of our rotation is kinda beat up at this point so it needs some rounding out (I'm also hoping to have to wash a little less often than I did with my first two kids in the newborn stage). However, this is most likely our last baby and I don't want to shell out too much extra $$ for stuff w/ a very short lifespan, kwim?

I love the Swaddlers diapers, my DD was 7.12 at birth and we went through 2 boxes of NB, then 2 boxes of size 1, and one box of size 2. I would buy a small pack of NB diapers but don't open them until you get home from the hospital, that way you can return if your baby is big!

I had 100 or so newborn size dipes. I think i had some left over from hospital.. DS was 8 lbs.. He wore those for maybe 2 weeks or so. Then he was in size one until about 2 1/2 months old.

DS was 8 lbs at birth and closer to 7lbs 5 oz when we came home. He's currently 9 lbs. The only NB size diapers we used were the samples that we got in the mail. So far we've gone through one 96 ct box of size 1 Pampers from Target ($16.99, I think) and one 50-ish ct box of size 1 Up & Up from Target ($6, I think). We just started in on a 234 ct case of size 1-2 Pampers from Sam's Club ($38.99).
I have 15 prefolds and 3 Thirsties Duo covers which we use during the day when I can. The prefolds seem to be a bit big on DS yet and we actually have more leaking/wicking issues with those than with the 'sposies for now. |

Any chance the prefolds are peeking out near his leg a bit and aren't totally being covered by the Thirsties? We had occasional wicking if the prefold was sticking out at the leg hole and not covered by the cover itself.

If you have a baby that is around 6 lbs at birth send your hubby to the store as soon as he can and get some PREMIE (not newborn) Swaddlers diapers (I know Target keeps them, Amazon.com, and Diapers.com should too, but you may not need a whole case of them). They were the only things that worked for DD until she was about a month old and could finally use the newborn ones. We tried the Huggies Newborn diapers and she even leaked out of those. Also 7th Generation diapers are also working for my friend with a premie baby, and I believe they run a bit smaller than Pampers, Huggies, etc. 7th G will be more expensive but they are really nice diapers, and don't smell at all.
Good luck with the last week! |

Agree with pp about getting one pack of nb. They can be so skinny in the beginning, with tiny butts! That umbilical groove can be handy to. It was for us this time around.
