Default DH and Sophie the Giraffe funny

I bought a Sophie the Giraffe when it dropped in price down to $14 on amazon.com (still the current price, BTW). It arrived a couple of days ago. Here's DH's reaction:

Me: I got a Sophie the Giraffe for the baby.
DH: THIS is Sophie the Giraffe? This thing? But it's not even cute.
(Takes it out of the box).
Wait a minute, this is a dog toy!
(It squeaks when pressed)
This IS a dog toy! Why did you get it again?
Me: Apparently babies love it. And it was on sale for just $14.
DH: Wait, you paid $14 to get our baby a dog toy???

It cracked me up. DH has never used the phrase "what, you paid $x for this?" before. Never questioned anything I've bought. But for a $14 must-have baby item, he's in shock!

I must confess, it is pretty ugly and I don't get the appeal. But I guess I'm not a 3 month old who is teething. They do like it, right?

Yeah someone else posted the same thing about it reminding them of a dog toy last week, Jeana I think. My sister had one way back in the 80s and it lasted forever. We didn't have one for DD and glad that I didn't waste the money on it then because DD never even put a teething ring in her mouth; she was obsessed with her hand. Hope #2 enjoys it!

LOL I ordered Sophie a few weeks ago to give my nephew for Christmas. I took it out of the box to check it out and see what all the fuss was about. Gotta tell ya, my 3 and 5 year olds were begging me to hold it and did not want to give her back! Then, my sweet sweet Black Lab who never gets aggressive over anything, actually jumped on me and tried to get it out of my hand! So tell, your DH that yes, dogs Sophie too.
FWIW, the 9 month old that it was purchased for also took to her right away

That's true, LOL--we have had to replace Sophie twice because our dog stole her, it was just too tempting.

it's well worth the money though, DS has loved it since he was really small and takes it everywhere.

I must live under a rock 'cause I had never heard of Sophie until reading about it on the boards this year. (why don't i remember it from previous years?!)

Anyway, we were at a friend's house NYE and I saw Sophie in person. I said "Oh! so this is Sophie the Giraffe! Umm, it seems a lot like a dog toy."

I too was underwhemed when I first opened Sophie. But DS (7 mos) seems to like her well enough now and he hasn't started teething yet. But I was pleasantly surprised when our 16 month old neice visited over the holidays and LOVED Sophie. So I think Sophie will pay off in the end.

I hadn't even heard of Sophie until a few months ago. And when I did, I wished we'd had one for DD1.
A) She loves giraffes (or any animal for that matter).
B) She mouthed *everything* and had no new teething toys. She chewed on stuff that really was not intended as a teething toy. I still live with the guilt that my DD used hand-me-down teethers from her cousin - is there anything grosser - that were probably neither BPA free nor pthalate free. Which is horrifying considering I both know and care about reducing chemical risk exposure.

So getting a BPA/pthalate free chew toy for our next critter, er daughter, is the least I could do to assuage some of that guilt! And if she's a chewer like her big sis, maybe some kind of wooden teether. DH would probably like that better.

OK - so tell me why I can't just buy a dog toy instead? (I probably already know the answer, it's just too tempting)

I bought a Sophie for my nephew (who's not anywhere close to teething yet as he is only 8 weeks old) for Christmas because I wanted to give him SOMETHING and didn't want to take up a ton of room, because my sister still lives at Dad's and space is VERY limited.

He seemed to like it just fine ... the squeak seemed to be the best part.

Totally agree with the dog toy assessment, but 7 mo old DS LOVES Sophie. We call her his girlfriend. He loves the squeak and she has so many different parts to chew. Of course, DD recently got a Barbie so I think Sophie may not be the girlfriend any longer. If only Barbie didn't have small parts. And squeaked.
