Default Backless booster v Full back booster

Which is better? When is it ok to use a Backless Bosster? My mom just bought us the Clek booster for M. Can we use that primarily?

Highback boosters reduce the head injury rate by up to 70% compared to backless boosters so it is recommended that kids use a highback booster until they no longer fit (age 7-8 for shorter ones up to age 10+ for the tallest ones). A highback booster will almost always position the shoulder belt better than a backless booster and the sides and head wings will keep them in a better position.

That booster specifically, while extremely nice (drool worthy, cute and very well made) is pretty big for a 5 yo. I tried my oldest in one at one point and he was swimming in it. If he sat to one side, there was about 6" of space between him and the other armrest. It also is one of the few backless boosters that does NOT come with a shoulderbelt positioner. The ones on most backless boosters are a pain to use, but they do work when used. Unfortunately the Clek backless does not have one. It also is pretty shallow and kids that are big enough to use it many times complain about the lack of leg support.

If your mom can return it, you can get a good highback booster like the Britax Parkway SG or the Recaro Vivo for about the same price. Otherwise, it has an 8 year expiration and would make a good seat for later or a backup seat.

DS and DD2 are still in Britax Parkway boosters. In addition to the safety benefits, they are very comfortable, especially when they fall asleep on longer trips.
