Just curious. I have a friend who doesn't, and it boggles my mind. Especially since she doesn't have a car and lives in a major city with pretty mediocre public transport. She doesn't have kids, but she does do a lot of activities. It would be different if pay phones actually existed still. If nothing else, I think she should have one for safety reasons.
(I'm not equating not having a cell with not having a FB account btw).

My DH doesn't have one, it's annoying, although the times he really needs one when he goes off on mega mountain bike rides in the middle of nowhere, there is no coverage around here anyway
![]() ETA He doesn't have a FB account either

I don't know anyone without one. I can't imagine. Seriously...I can't imagine not having one. I mean, what do you do if your car breaks down on the side of the road? In this day, I'd be pretty hesitant to except help from a random stranger (which makes me sad, but that's a whole other thread.) I use mine all the time, but even if you don't...what about emergencies? I'd rather pay for a cell phone & do away with my home phone.

I've had a cell phone off and on over the years, with big gaps without one. It never bothers me.. there are plenty of phones around if I have a real emergency. I don't really like cell phones a lot.. I know several people who call constantly if they know I have a cell phone around (I have one now - it stays in the car, and I don't really give out the number). I hate the feeling like I have to be accessible and in touch all the time.

I got my first cell phone when DS was a year old, so about two years ago. I would have liked one sooner but they're much more expensive in Canada than they are in the US and DH wouldn't agree to it. He did agree to getting CAA for the car after I had a scary car breakdown incident - but I'm not quite sure how he thought I was going to be contacting them w/o a cell since any long distance driving in Canada can be a pretty long walk to the nearest house or business!
I will say, though, that it was not fun trying to explain to people over and over and over that I did not have a cell. Yes, it was a pain being w/o a phone but when you live in a major city there are always payphones around. I'm glad I have one now for safety reasons but I really don't use it all that much and I rarely give out the number. I think cell phone usage and the expectation that we all ought to be reachable 24/7 has gotten way out of hand. I'm sick of hearing other peoples' loud annoying conversations in restaurants, stores, public restrooms - just about everywhere these days. Though I do like that more and more restaurants are banning them! Sorry for the rant, but this is one thing I just don't get

Technically I have one but I almost never use it; my husband has one from work but almost never uses it otherwise. I don't even know the number for mine, and have probably made only a handful of calls on it in the several years I've had it (just needed portable internet connection for a business years ago, and kept it for driving, but don't get out much lately and usually forget it when I do).
Honestly I can't understand how people are so dependent upon them! And I absolutely hate when people are visiting and accept calls on them. |

I really hate cell phones. There are weeks that it is at home with a dead battery. DH wants me to have one because of my health and the kids but If it weren't for that I would never have one.

my husband does not. We lived overseas where we both went without cell phones for 3 years and he prefers not having one. We have one that I carry around, but it is our only phone, no land line.
