Default Help! Gift for 5 yo girl---I'm in boy mode!

As a Mom of 2 boys I've been in superhero, Star Wars, Lego mode for too long and need help on getting a birthday gift for a girl turning 5! She's DS's classmate and I don't know much about her. DS says she likes princesses, but I don't know much more than that?!? Party is in a couple of weeks and during this crazy time of year I don't want to be running all over the place at the last minute. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated

R.

Both DDs are into Littlest Pet Shop. DD#2 and her friends like princess color forms where you "dress up" Disney princesses, POlly Pocket, felt boards that come with a scene you create with the felt pieces, shrinky dinks.

Girls like Legos, too.

Books are always great. Perhaps a book about a princess?

ETA: A Little Princess She's old enough for a read-aloud even if she can't read it by herself yet.

I have a boy turning six. My girl is only 2, so I'm not really in the "girl" loop yet, either. Good luck!

I'm a HUGE fan of books for kids of all ages (adults too for that matter). I try to get books that aren't about popular characters (Dora, Superman, etc.), but that are more original. Classics are always wonderful. "The Princess and the Pea" is about a princess. There are many classic fairy tales about princesses too. A book and a small toy, board game or travel game are also great for summer vacation take-alongs.

We like pixos, and Emily just got a cool gift that is a make your own cards set, from Learning Express. Alas, princesses are big too, and the Barbie corvette has been a hit although its been driving stuffed dogs so far and not barbies. I got her the tiny dress up princesses, but the hair detaches which is freaky looking and Katie already beheaded Ariel so I don't recommend those at all, made by Mattel.

How about a pink brick box of leggos. or dress up costume -- I like the brand little adventures b/c it washes well.

Head to Michaels/AC Moore and find some crafts or a craft kit, i.e. latch hook, window glass painting kits. My 5 year old loves these items. You can always find a 40% off one item coupon too.

Also, for someone you know better, a friend put all types of $1 & $2 craft items in a tupperware....it was a huge hit!

twelve dancing princesses is another princess story that i think is probably good for a 5 year old (i've seen a really pretty version at b&n recently in both hard and paperback).

i agree that craft supplies are a good approach. i was very craftsy as a child you could get one of those wooden treasure chest thingies at michaels and fill it with "decorate your own" stuff- tiara/crown, princess wand, the chest itself.... jewels, those glitter glue pens, etc to decorate with?i would have loved that at 5 or you could put a $10 gift card and a michaels coupon inside the wooden box and the child could pick their own stuff! "fill with your own treasure" kit....

my girl is not quite 2.5 yet, so i'm not sure how on track these things are...i haven't been 5 in a longlongtime

Princess crown from Etsy? Amaya wears hers all the time.

I like this one:

Craft supplies were a big hit here. If you have a United Arts and Education near you, they have some great stuff. One big hit was dot markers - we've given them as gifts several times since.

There's a board game called Pretty Pretty Princess that's a hit at that age too. http://www.amazon.com/Pretty-Princes...4383775&sr=8-1
