Default Not enjoying Gymboree

DS is 16 mo and I recently did a preview class at Gymboree. This one was in a mall and had glass doors and outside there were the usual playthings like cars and buses attached to the ground that would "run" on coins. DS refused to mingle with the kids in the class or participate in the group activities, and preferred to hang out near the glass windows and look at these "cars" and "buses". And finally when we got out, he didn't want to ride them. I'm not sure why all this happened - is he not ready for a group activity classes or do I just need to keep bringing him here to get used to it? What do you all think?

Not sure what the answer is. I did Little Gym with DS1 starting when he was 4 months old. Seriously, until he was atleast 2, I think the class was more of an excuse for me to get out and talk to other moms. And to this day, one of my best mom friends is from that very first session so it was a success! DS2 hasn't been in any formal classes but he gets so much socialization through existing playgroups and other activities we do now. I know that isn't much of an answer, but I think I'm trying to say that your DS may or may not be ready for the class, but if you have the extra money in your budget and want to participate in one, go for it. It certainly won't harm him but I don't think he is missing a key part of life if you don't do it. He can be around other kids lots of places - parks, pools and the like.

If he's not ready it's not a big deal his only 16mts. I would wait a little while if he doesn't seem ready. start with classes at your local library. There usually free and really cute in my area. And you'll be able to meet some moms in your area.

Don't worry about it. At 16 months, it's all about parallel playing and not so much "playing together". They do their own thing. By the way, is this DC's first time at Gymboree? Sometimes, all the activity is over stimulating and sometimes also it doesn't take much i.e. bright lights, too many different colors, different people, unfamiliar place, sound etc. He is outside his comfort zone. Maybe it's your LO's way of tuning it all out.

Give him a little time, keep talking with DC, and keep reassuring DC, he'll come around. If this really isn't the thing for DC try a more milder class i.e. music class at a community center.

DS did Gymboree from 10 months until he outgrew the place at 22 months. Moving him up a level early did not help. The challenge was gone. He was bored while others were still engaged. He wanted the big boy playground. DD will be entering soon.
