Default gift for infant twins 1st bday?

my neighbors invited us to the twins' 1st bday. I barely know them and am trying to figure out gifts.....

one larger gift to be shared? 2 smaller different gifts? 2 smaller identical gifts?

At that age, we were grateful for ANYTHING that came in twos. Our girls fought over EVERYTHING and any toy that we had in duplicate bought a few minutes of peace. Two of the same item in different colors worked too - our girls could see that they were the same, just different colors, and were happy to "trade" back and forth without fighting. Some days the fighting got so bad that we would ONLY give them toys that we had duplicates of!

It might have just been our girls' personalities. I dunno. They STILL fight (now 21 months old) but are getting better at "taking turns" and "sharing". But whenever we buy anything for them, our first thought still is "should we get two?" Ugh

Books are good too.

I was going to say that I thought the first birthday was the only one you can really give them a gift to share...but I guess not after reading PP!

How much do you want to spend? I assume not much? How about a set of Boynton books? Or there was a thread a week or two ago about the best nursery rhyme book, that's a good gift Our DDs love nursery rhymes, this is the one we have:

If you want more of a toy, this was my girls favorite first birthday toy (other than their riding zebra, which is expensive).

Some parents really hate this toy though, because it plays music. But I think the music is cute, it's not overly loud, it's kind of goofy calliope sounding music. I'm telling you, all the kids at the girls' party went nuts over this thing, they barely got to play with it!

As a twin myself, my sister and I often had to share a lot of things and I do recall getting into a few fights about it. My sister and I have different personalities, so yes, it would be nice to give them separate gifts.

I would definitely get two of the same toy. I have 21 month old twin boys and they fight over everything. It is much easier if we have two of the exact same toy for them to play with. It has even gotten so bad at times that it has to be the same color in order to keep the peace.

Also, remember what is good for one child is not necessarily good for two. We got a couple of toys that became weapons when they were both playing. Someone gave our boys a drumset for their first birthday, and the drumsticks were quickly hid because they would hit eachother with them. Also, someone else gave them a game where you hit the balls with a hammer...again the hammer was put away to avoid hitting each other with it.

My boys really enjoyed the toy cell phones they got, balls, and books.
