Default Help me make a costume for DH by Sunday!

DD2 is wearing the cutest monkey costume and DH just decided (when he saw her wearing her costume this morning) that he would really like to dress up as the man with the yellow hat. it seems easy enough, but when i started searching, i realized that it will be harder, especially since i don't have time to order anything online.

can you help me please? this is so unlike dh, in a good way, so i would love to make this happen for him.

here are my thoughts, find a yellow dress shirt (don't know where i would find one), dye khakis yellow (unless someone knows where to find yellow pants -- maybe scrubs from a medical supply store?), make a tie and hat out of felt maybe or cover a witch's hat with yellow fabric? skip the boots.

any thoughts?

TIA!

Try finding white pants/shirt and dyeing them. Burlington coat factory tends to have mens clothing in unusual colors.

You could also use a long-sleeve yellow t-shirt or polo. If just a t-shirt, attach felt collar and buttons down the middle and at the "cuffs".

I wonder if you'd be able to find yellow coveralls or something similar at a medical supply store. Then stuff the bottom of the pants into boots.

You'd probably have to make the felt hat but I bet you could find an easy pattern online.

Good luck, it'll be so cute!!

Thrift store - white pants, white shirt (or yellow shirt, but if you buy white and dye them together they will match better) (check that the materials used to make them are compatible with the dye), buy a hat and spray paint it yellow and dye the clothes. Why buy new clothes for something that will probably never be used again?

You can't dye clothes to a lighter color (like khaki to yellow). Khaki also tend to react differently to dyes and bleaches (I ruined DH's pants not that long ago with a colorsafe stain remover I was using for something else that oversprayed and they sat for a day or two before I washed them - ruined with bleach spots.)

How about just wearing khaki clothes as a generic zookeeper if it's too difficult to put together a yellow outfit.

What about painters' clothes. Most paint supply stores sell "uniforms" for painters that are white pants and shirts. Maybe you could dye that. I do not know how much they cost. The tie could be felt, or you might just get lucky at the dept store.

The hat in the link to the kid's costume looked like a sombrero, maybe covered in felt?

I think that your idea is really cute!

unbelievable! i actually found yellow pants! even better, i also found a yellow shirt that matches perfectly! the pants are actually women's pants that i found on clearance for $5.00. there was only one pair, a size 18, and i didn't know if it would fit dh, but i bought it anyway. how could i not? i took it to the mens department where i found several yellow shirts, and nearly jumped up and down with excitement when i found one the same shade as the pants. and in dh's size. they had yellow ties too, one with a pattern that i thought would work, but unfortunately the ties were mostly bright yellows (and some mustards and golds) and the pants and shirt are a pale yellow.
anyway, the pants fit dh! now i'm going to work on a felt tie and hat and we'll be all set for tomorrow. i'm going to skip the boots because i don't have time.
dd is so excited!

So glad it worked out!! I didn't see this post earlier, or I would have said "Get women's pants!!!" My DH wore the exact same costume last year when our DD was a monkey, and I bought him big yellow pants from the thrift store's ladies section.
