Reading the thread asking about a newly developed pampers allergy reminded me of a similar issue with my 16 mo old. Back in Dec we gave him a new sippy cup and soon after we noticed a red circle around his mouth. Then last night he was chewing on Gnon and a few minutes later we noticed the same red blotchy circle around his mouth.
He used both latex & silicone nipples as a baby, and has been chewing on Gnon, Sophie, and similar his whole life. What's going on? |

Sounds to me like he has a latex allergy. I have a latex allergy that I developed while in nursing school and I was working as a nursing aid as a part time job. At first everyone kept telling me I was just sensitive to powdered gloves, but my hands would not only be red for DAYS after working, but they started to bleed! I've also developed an allergy to dogs. I've always been severely allergic to cats, but never dogs. Well, about 7 yrs ago, I started to become allergic to dogs. I had to kick my dog out of my room, b/c she was sleeping in bed with us. The eczema cleared up after I kept her out of our bed, but in the summer, if I wore anything short sleeve or shorts/skirts, I would get eczema on my elbows and knees if I was exposed to the dog on those parts. I didn't get rid of her, b/c it was a minor allergy, BUT for the latex allergy, I think it is much more serious. If I am around latex balloons, I can feel my throat tightening up. I just basically avoid latex at all costs now. Certain foods, that are affiliated with latex allergies also sometimes bother me, like avocado, sweet potatoes, carrots, etc..

You can develop a latex allergy with repeated exposure. My main OB can no longer deliver because she is so allergic to latex that she does not go in the L&D floor.

OP, I'd definitely mention it to your ped. asap. You don't want to mess around with a latex allergy, it that is what it is. Good luck!

Yes, and like PP said bananas can be another trigger for those w/ latex allergies. Latex is also in a surprising number of toys. (in EI I worked with quite a few kids with latex allergies).

Thanks all for the info and the heads up regarding related foods. I looked it up and there are ~15 fruits that are related. Wow. I really hope he's not allergic to bananas, as baby bananas are currently one of his favorite foods. I'll have to keep a close eye on him.
I wouldn't be that surprised if he does have an allergy, I'm allergic to peanuts so I know that increases the chance of him being allergic to something also. |
