Is anyone familiar with this? We want to send M to a private school that would be the best fit for his speech and language problems. Unfortunately, the tuition is $16000/y and we can't afford that. The McKay Scholarship is open to Florida students that meat their criteria.
M was approved but at the lowest amount of $5500. They determine this by reviewing his IEP. The problem with that is that it doesn't include language problems and possible CAPD. I was hoping anybody knew how I could get his matrix score higher. I am hoping to have him tested for dx for CAPD in August but it looks like they won't test him until he is in the middle of his 1st grade year. His K teacher has a son with the very same problem and noticed how similar M behaved. I have had M seen by other professionals and they do notice the language and other problems. I talked to the private school and they said they could give us a grant of $3000 but we still can't do $8000. This would be a perfect school for him and I am stuck. Can anyone help after reading all this rambling?

I don't know anything about this scholarship, since I'm in a different state. But I wanted to share that my son was tested for CAPD last week. We had been told for years that testing for CAPD couldn't be done until age 7 (DS turned 7 last month). So I was surprised to find out that the test the audiologist used is actually normed for kids as young as 5. So maybe it is possible to find someone who will test your DS now.
I don't know if this will help you, but I thought I would share: Last summer, I did the Earobics Step I program with DS. It's a computer program that helps with auditory processing. DS enjoyed the program a lot and we did see an improvement in language and listening skills. When DS was tested for CAPD, the skills that Earobics targets were the only areas that we scored above average in. All his other scores were below average or delayed. Good luck!

Thank you so much Gena; I'll look into the Earobics program. I think the reason they want them mid 1st grade is because it's a 3 hour test and they might sit better and get through the entire thing.
I am going to call another audiologist tomorrow and I'll know Thursday if the audiologist will test him. I called her first because she is from a well known children's hospital here and M has used her before. Either way he is getting tested and I am determined to find a way to send him to that school.
