Default Monogrammed gifts

How do y'all feel about giving or receiving monogrammed gifts?

My aunt gave DS a cute beach towel and matching bag (from PBK) yesterday and both are monogrammed with his name. It's adorable but....now #2 won't be able to use those items to take to school or anywhere else because they have his brothers name on it. I can't even exchange it for something else DS needs more than another towel...we have close to 20 beach towels already.

I think it depends on what it is. A beach towel and matching bag? I think it's cute and I wouldn't mind. My BFF had monogrammed beach towels for her kids (boy and girl) and they were SO cute. I wanted some for mine!

I got a LLBean backpack for DD1 for preschool and kindergarten. I specifically didn't get them monogrammed with initials or names because I want DD2 to be able to use it when she's ready to go to school. By then - DD2 will need a bigger backpack, and I can pass the current one down.

I also have some stuff monogrammed for their room - name specific stuff. But in general we don't monogram much. I just got a blanket monogrammed for DD2 as a lovey - and luckily she LOVES it, and it has become her lovey!

When DD was born/little I deliberately shied away from anything that couldn't be passed down. Now, after seeing how tastes change and each child is individual, I love personalized stuff. Kids tend to like having their names on things, and it makes items really special. And really, by the time something is ready to hand down, it is often not in the best shape and you often want something new anyway. I'd say just enjoy them! :-)

I really don't mind them at all. My DDs have lots of monogrammed stuff. Other than clothing, I let them share. Neither DD has any issue with using the other's monogrammed beach towel, cup, bag, etc.

I think why I'm most annoyed is she gives every gift monogrammed....stuff DS can't even use for years like a cooking apron! But she is also the person who has given me items she kept from when her boys were little and wants them back for potentional grandchildren. Her boys are 12 and 15!

Who gives gifts and wants them back for future grandkids??? If you want to give heirloom gifts, that's fabulous - with the intent that they hand them down to THEIR kids - not your own grandkids! That's batty!!
