Default What tv shows does your 2nd grader watch?

DS is a bit behind in some ways and one of those is a tendency to watch tv shows aimed at younger kids. I don't mind at all, except that it is a social issue. I'd like for him to be conversant in at least one age appropriate show.

I posted about this last year and one of the suggestions I got from lots of people was Phineas and Ferb. That was a huge hit and he still watches that. Is that still a good one now that he is going into second grade?

Thanks!
Catherine

I would suggest Transformers. There is a new series called Transformers Prime, but there is also the Transformers from the mid 1980s that is replayed on a network called Hub or if you don't have cable I think the originals are available on Netflix or maybe Amazon Prime video thing. Dragon Ball Z Kai, and Avatar are also probably popular, they are on Nickeledeon. I am just guessing but I think that Phineas & Ferb is still good for a 2nd grader.

My DD tends to like to watch the same cartoons as DH and I do and I tend to think that they are more popular with the kinder to third grade set of kids.

Our biggest hits are Nature, Nova, and Nova Science Now. DragonFly TV and Curiosity Quest also also favorites. Cartoons just aren't that great.

My DD who just finished 2nd grade, and my other DD who is going into 2nd grade love P&F, as well as Wild Kratts, Wizards of Waverly Place (which I think is less girly than some of the other Disney/Nick tween shows), Fetch!, and Sponge Bob (which I know is not so popular on the BBB, but is pretty standard fare for the 2nd grade set, from what I've observed. I've watched a lot of SB over the past year and am not sure what people find so objectionable, but YMMV, of course.)

ETA: They also love the Smurfs and The Jetsons, but not sure their peers are watching those .

I second Wild Kratts, espcially is your DS is an animal lover. It's half cartoon/half real-life animal education. It's on PBS Kids. My 5-year-old watches it, but I think the age PBS advertises for the show is 6 and up.

My DD#1 watches younger kids shows b/c that is what DD#2 watches. If *I* am choosing, I choose Disney Jr in French. If DH or the girls are choosing, it will be in English and fairly random.

I will say, DD#1 likes Say Yes to the Dress and So You Think You Can Dance. SHe hasn't (thankfully) gotten into Hannah Montana and the other non-cartoon shows really. Both girls like Glee, but I PVR it and only let them watch the singing, not the plot.

Your son is between my two in age/grade. Our current faves are Phinneas and Ferb, Zeke & Luther & I'm in the Band on Disney XD and Pokemon, Bay Blades, Looney Tunes & Garfield on Cartoon Network. I have to really have to watch CN though as there are lots of shows there that we view as complete garbage. YMMV of course. The boys like Sponge Bob too, but for some reason we don't happen to tune in when it's on...not on purpose though.

We also watch American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Wipeout & America's Funniest Home Videos as a family. My youngest loves River Monsters for some reason (I admit to liking that show, but I think it's strange that he constant asks if it's on). We like nature/science too but mostly watch them as a family vs. just the kids.

I don't know if DS watches the same stuff as his friends - they mostly just talk about Pokemon all the time. He just finished 2nd grade - lately he watches P&F, Fairly Oddparents, Jimmy Neutron. Most of his friends seemed to be over Spongebob by last year - DS will watch it if it is on, but doesn't seek it out. He also likes Scooby-Doo and Tom & Jerry.

We don't have cable so get everything from Netflix - we ended up watching a lot of Rugrats. He thinks it's hilarious and I actually like watching it too.

Well, we homeschool and my kids and their friends never really talk about TV (I think my kids watch the most out of all their friends). That said, my 7 year old likes Phineas and Ferb, Clone Wars, and Tom & Jerry. He also likes to watch HGTV, weirdly enough. He enjoys watching Cake Boss, America's Funniest Home Videos, Nova and other PBS documentaries, and Destination Truth.

His tastes are pretty varied, I think. He doesn't mind watching younger kid shows. Thankfully, he really hasn't gotten into the Disney/Nick shows aimed at tweens.

Oh, I also let him watch the Simpsons, but I know that's a no-no for a lot of kids his age. He's seen a little Futurama, too.
