Default Pearls?

I am thinking I should ask DH for some a pearl necklace (get your mind out of the gutter!) for Christmas. No idea how to even start with shopping for this. Are pearls still cool?

I have no idea if they are still cool or not, but I know that NONE of my friends wear them these days. I think the last time I wore pearls was my wedding day 13 yrs ago. If you want some, you should get some though, I think with certain outfits, pearls look very appropriate.

I have a pearl necklace and I wear it a lot. That being said, I work in a professional, conservative environment and I think that a nice black suit with pearls can be just the ticket from time to time. Also, I am unusually young for my position at work, so I wear them because I think they look a little more mature as well. But I love my pearls. My Mom bought mine while she was in China, so I don't know much about shopping for pearls.

I wear pearls to work frequently. I have two necklaces, both of which were purchased in China. I'm not sure if they're considered cool right now, but I think they're classic.

I was given a beautiful pearl necklace from Jared when I graduated high school. I LOVE it and wear it with some frequency--mostly when I'm going for a sophisticated, classy look (presenting a paper at a conference, Easter Sunday at church, going to a wedding, etc.). It's one of my nicest pieces of jewelry. I think it instantly makes me look more put together, without looking like I'm trying too hard. I don't think a plain strand of pearls is ever out of style, really. Anyway, I think you can't possibly go wrong with a set of Mikimoto pearls from Jared (pricy, but worth it!).

I have a double strand pearl necklace and matching earings from when I was in India. I like them. I esp. like them with a black, wool sheath dress. Very classy. I also have a costume necklace from Banana Republic that I really like. It has several strands of various sized pearls twisted. I guess I also have a Kenneth Cole faux peral bracelet (several strands of large, graduated pearls.

I like pearl necklaces that are unusual - like a lariat. I don't own one because pearls are not really my thing. FWIW, I work in a pretty conservative environment and senior women managers here rarely wear pearls. I see pearl earrings more often than I see necklaces.

I have two pretty much identical pearl necklaces. My mom gave me one when I graduated from HS. I used to wear it, but probably haven't in over 10 years. So then for whatever reason, DH bought me an almost identical one a couple of years ago from the jewelry district in NY. He wanted to get me a nice piece of jewelry, which I appreciate, but now I have two pearl necklaces I never wear. Luckily, I have twins I can pass hand them down to. So to answer your question, I think they're a classic look, but they're just NMS any more.

ETA: that middle necklace arivecchi posted is very pretty!

I know a lot of women that wear pearls, including myself.

Like diamonds, you have to try on different diameters to see what you like. Some people look fabulous in gigantic pearls - others, not so much.

Get a longer necklace - at least 24" - so much more you can do with them.
