We have a Mean Old Man too!!!!!
He lives next door, and he's totally the parking "police". He has taken to parking his. own. car. in front of his house so that no one else will.
He's such an @ss. When we were having construction done on our house, we had a dumpster in our driveway and had to park on the street. The DAY the dumpster was removed, DH happened to have his car in front of Mean Old Man's house - and he CALLED THE COPS TO COMPLAIN. Now, because the library is down the block from us, the village posted a whole bunch of "1 hour parking" signs. But nobody actually pays attention to them, and there is no fine posted along with the sign. But because of the complaint, a cop came, chalked the tire, came back and wrote a ticket.
The kicker was that I WAS HOME ALL DAY as Stevie had *JUST* been born. Did this guy come next door and ask me to move DH's car - which he KNOWS is DH's car? Nooooooooo.
@sshooooooooooooooooooooooooole!!!!!!!
What is it with Mean Old Men, too much free time, and obessive compulsive disorder that revolves around people parking on a public street in front of their house?!?!?

OKay, I'll be honest that I don't like other people regularly parking in front of my house like they own it, either. This was a problem where we used to live - they'd leave it empty in front of their house and park in front of mine. I'm fine with guests or on occasion, FWIW.

But what business of his is it that YOU park in front of your house?

I think it's thoughtful of you to relinquish the right to park in the garage in an effort to keep other people's kids safe...who are essentially playing in the street.

I'll be honest too. I strongly dislike it when people regularly park their cars in front of my house. We work really hard to keep our garage free of junk so we car park both cars IN the garage. I hate to have the front of our home looking junky with someone's car parked there every day. I do not, however, care about neighbors parking their cars in the street (just not in front of MY house please).

Oh the running over the child thing--just over the top. So bizarre I can't even figure out how to address it.

I think the thing about in front of your house is a bit different in some places. Where my parents live in the Midwest, it would be weird to park in front of someone else's house. I'm in San Francisco. Empty parking spaces are fair game. There is no long curb in front of one house. Lots of houses are divided up into condos and have way more units than curb space. And I had parked there because we had a delivery truck at our place earlier in the day and had moved our car to make space for it. This guy was just plain nuts. (He actually swore at me in front of my then 4 year old.). We considered buying a junker and parking it in front of his house more or less permanently.
