Default What happens to your bed/car/ furniture when your water breaks?

Ok.. I know it sounds weird... but my water never broke with DC#1 and I don't know what to expect.

This might be TMI, but DH and I were arguing over what bed/mattress to buy (an ongoing, increasingly contenious "discussion") and he finally said what happens if your water breaks on our new expensive mattress??1 It was the ah! moment of "we're arguing because we're worried about something we're not actually arguing about". Yea! Argument fixed...

Except now I'm obssessing about what would a happen. Do we need to but plastic sheets on the bed? Does a mattress cover protect enough? Our 20yr mattress is currenty killing my 30week pregnant body and I don't think I can make it until post-delievery to get something more comfortable. I've been sleeping on the couch... but heck that's more expensive to replace than our mattress!

Based our our first, I have a scheduled C-section planned, but who know's if I'll make it to 40 weeks when it's scheduled.

This did not happen to me, but I have heard horror stories of things being ruined when the water broke. To be on the safe side, I rode to the hospital in labor on one of those vinyl table cloths. We had just gotten a new car, and I did not want the passenger seat to be ruined! Our lamaze teacher, recommended we do this.
I am pretty sure we protected the mattress also.

My water broke with both of my boys, and both times it was while I was sleeping. I can only speak for myself, but it wasn't like a giant gush- it almost felt like I was leaking a tiny bit of pee. Both times I immediately jumped out of bed and ran for the bathroom.

The first time, it was just a slow trickle for quite a while. I wasn't even positive that it was my water breaking until after I had it checked at the hospital. My pajamas didn't even get wet, let alone the bed.

The second time, it was the same sensation, but after I jumped up, it started to gush. Still, the bed didn't get wet.

If you're worried though, get some Chux pads and a waterproof mattress cover and I think you'd be safe. You could always do a couple of layers - like maybe a towel under the mattress pad- if you wanted to be even more cautious.

Like pp, mine broke when I slept. It felt really weird, like this popping sensation, but nothing came out. Since it woke me up I decided to go to the bathroom. On the walk there I had a slight leak. One the walk back all of a sudden it broke in a big gush. I think you aren't really in danger of ruining the mattress. I haven't heard anyone have that happen (though never say never). I'd get a waterproof mattress pad if you are worried.

My water broke with DD and it wasn't a huge gush. It was just enough to fill up a pad frequently. I didn't realize my water broke because I expected the huge gush. I called the ob and they said, "sounds like your water broke. I'll meet you at the hospital!"

My DH made me put a garbage bag under the sheet just in case. In reality, when my water broke, it was a slow trickle. In fact, I wasn't even 100% sure that my water was broken because I was expecting it to be the gush that you see on tv.

Just get a waterproof mattress pad now... you will need it anyway when the baby poops, pees and pukes all over you and the bed later (sometimes all at once).

A 30 week pregnant woman needs a decent mattress. Get the mattress pad if you're concerned, though I wouldn't be. You can always sleep on a towel. But you need a nice mattress.

With DS1 my water broke when I stood up from a chair. It was a little like a small pee and nothing hit the floor or furniture. I said to DH "I think my water just broke" deadpan. I went to the bathroom and sure enough. So it wasn't a gush or an issue.

I slept, sat, and drove on a stack of towels just in case. Towels worked fine for me. I would imagine a typical waterproof mattress pad would do the trick.
