DS is bringing home his first spelling lists today. Are there any fun ways to learn spelling, or is the best still read, write, write in a sentence?
Thanks |

I read (probably in Family Fun magazine) about a woman who writes each letter needed for the list on a separate post-it note and sticks them on the wall. She then tells her son one of the words from the list and he has to select the correct letters and rearrange them to make the word. They do the whole list and see if every post-it note has been used by the end.

I start with a quick quiz to see which ones she knows. Next day, I just have her copy them. Then we do different things with them later in the week. We've used Banangrams tiles to spell them. I've grouped them by similarities and pointed those out to her, and also give her hints (that we practice) on how to spell them. For example, once, she had a bunch of words that started with st, sk, sp, etc. and all the st words happened to have ""i" as the middle vowel, so I pointed that out to her. Or, for "sponge", she drew Spongebob and when she drew the circles on his body, I pointed out that they are like "o"s, so she would remember that sponge is with an "o" instead of a "u".

something i've read is to do something physical while spelling them, like jump rope or bounce a ball or skip down the block. supposed to trigger different learning centers or something. anyway, it sounded pretty good so i filed it away for later.

He could spell them with magnetic letters, or in cornmeal with his finger.
When I was a kid, my sister and I used to play teacher, and read the words and sentences off into a tape recorder, then test ourselves.

Our Thursday assignment is to do something "creative" with the spelling words as a family. (The rest of the week is all DD1: Monday = writing, Tuesday = writing alphabetically, Wednesday = writing each in a sentence.) Last week, our first week, we spelled all the words with Bananagram letters and criss-crossed them. I'm thinking of seeing if I can find a word search generator for this week. And I'm hoping we don't have to do completely different ideas for every week of the school year!

We practice the missed words from the previous night spelling quiz while walking to school, a letter a step (we kind of stomp, like the silly way the Monkees walk during their intro). We also chant the spelling, emphasizing the trick letter (i.e. the part he misses). I also have him simply jump up and down while spelling.

You could also make a word find with them - there is some site where you enter the words and it makes the word find for you!
