Default Rochester, NY anyone?? Thursday places to eat?

My brother from Ottawa, Canada is driving down to Rochester on Thursday for a hockey tournament and asked me what is typically open. They will need to eat out all meals, and of course pick up a few necessities (like cheap beer). Any local BBB'ers have any ideas...not sure exactly where they are staying...but even the names of supermarkets that might be open.

I told him it really varies from city to city and year to year, I've never eaten out on Thanksgiving so can't say if places like Chili's are open, and they aren't looking for a turkey dinner either as those types of places will be crowded.

Rochester native here . PM me where the tournament is and/or the area where they are staying and I'd be happy to assist. I'm guessing the hockey tournament is at the sport center at Monroe Community College, if not at the downtown arena. If at MCC, that's in the suburb of Henrietta and there's a ton of stuff in the area...Wegmans and Tops (groceries), just about every chain restaurant, a mall, etc. I could also recommend some no chain eats if they are interested.

Another Rochester-area native. I second wendibird's recommendation of Wegmans. No matter where the hockey tournament is located, there should be one a short distance from where your brother is staying. I think they are usually only open until noon on Thanksgiving, but might be wrong. Regardless, they have all your regular grocery necessities, plus most of them have restaurants inside and great prepared food (kind of like WF).

If the hockey tournament is in Henrietta, as wendibird thought, then I recommend The King and I Thai restaurant. I spent a summer living in Thailand, and it's the most authentic Thai I've had in the US. Plus, they have large portions and reasonable prices. I'm not sure if they're open on Thanksgiving, but your brother could call them and find out.

Also, I really like Mark's pizza, they have locations all over Rochester.

The King and I is fantastic!

Wegmans is open until 5pm (all locations) on Thanksgiving.

Um, how about Dinosaur Barbeque!?!?

Bill Grays (not classy, but a Rochester fav)

Weggies is about the only supermarket there is, as the chain started in Rochester. Tops may be open as well, but I'd stick to Wegmans.

Zeb's is also good for our favorite Zweigles white hots.

PS-Nick Tahoe's has their famous "Trash Plate" but it is NOT an area where someone unfamiliar should travel after dark. Just an FYI. Penfield Hots also offers a simlar plate and is in a very safe area.

Pontillio's also has great hot wings.

Tahoe's garbage plate is a thing to do in Rochester just like visiting Wegmans but I agree that it's not in a very desirable area.

Not sure what else will be open on Thanksgiving. Sticky Lips BBQ has a new location in Henrietta. Jay's Diner has a HUGE menu and has been in Henrietta for like a century. Dibella's has AMAZING subs (great sub bread which is also used by Wegman's take out deli BTW). The Lehigh Diner on W. Henrietta Rd has a great lunch menu. If he ventures downtown there are a lot of great places on Park Ave...my fav are Charlie's Frog Pond (diner but also great eclectic dinner specials) and Esan (thai). Oh, also in Henrietta are The Pita Pit and Laurie's Lunchbox which are also great lunch time spots.

He thinks they are staying just east of Rochester, the rink is in Fairport and the hotel in Framington or Farmington...

Thanks for the help ladies, am sending him the link to this thread.
