Default DH's vigorous defense of Tostitos

I can't believe this. DH has just made a passionate and serious defense of the need for Tostitos in our house. For the first time in a while, he bought a jumbo double pack at Sam's Club this weekend ($6) which is almost gone. So today, he bought two more at a regular grocery store for $8. So $14 on Tostitos in 5 days, during a time we are seriously trying to save money. That alone is enough for me to say we shouldn't be buying this, but DH vigorously defended it as a necessary expense, yes, necessary.

This, despite the fact that DH has a high blood pressure, diagnosed at age 39, is a little overweight and has started working out again. He decries me buying cheese and sweets quite regularly, but Tostitos are ok? He also wants to weekly buy no-salt Saltine crackers for him. He acknowledges that other crackers that I often buy (Hint of Salt Triscuits, for instance) and which he eats with gusto are healthier, but that he doesn't care (highly unlike him to not at least pay lip service to healthier foods). He says he wants to eat Tostitos or crackers before dinner.... wonderful, another really healthy choice and a bit of a slap to me if I'm the one making dinner as he fills up on Tostitos. I just bought three new packages of crackers yesterday, whcih he knew, but he bought Saltines today. Really, four new packages of crackers in the house in 12 hours?

He knows our children are simple carb fiends with little self-control. He says this is WHY we need Tostitos, because our children will eat them. Ditto for the Saltines. I said that the kids get Saltine crumbs all over the counter and floor, open multiple packs at once that get stale, literally shove them in their mouths and let the crumbs fall out, and don't eat them with anything else to improve the nutritional value. DH implies that these are completely unreasonable points.

I can't believe it. He honestly thinks we need to stock our house with junk food chips and empty calorie crackers, to the tune of $15ish a week, because he likes it and, all the better, it's what our kids will eat. And he says it's me that is unreasonable.

Groan, this reminds me of when my DH tried to convince me that potato chips are a legitimate "side item / vegetable" for the kid's meals.

Having said that, I do have a mean potato chip and dip addiction, and it is very hard to go without! Your DH does need to make the decision to keep them out of the house, but I do relate to the irrational behavior sometimes!

This could have been written by my mom 25 years ago. Unfortunately things haven't changed. What about the multigrain ones, not that is much better!
