College Woodwork makes this eco-friendly, made-in-Canada furniture line sold only in specialty stores.

Started by a Seventh-day Adventist high school in a suburb of Toronto, College Woodwork began as a woodworking class in 1921. The goal was to provide students of the bible school experience at furniture building. Still owned by the school (now called Kingsway College), College Woodwork employs students who turn out bedroom furniture, both adult and nursery. The adult furniture is sold under the College Woodwork brand, while nursery furniture is marketed as Kidz Décoeur.

Kidz Décoeur features quality finishing touches—dovetail drawer construction, full-extension slides, solid birch construction, etc. Design wise, Kidz Décoeur ranges from traditional to modern. Examples: the Greenwich collection features two-tone finishes, while the Augusta features curved legs on both the crib and dresser. The top-selling crib is the Carson (pictured), which features a traditional four-square design.

Thirteen finishes are available plus 12 different dresser knobs, and an additional seven knobs or pulls are available for an upcharge. Finishes are available in standard or “weathered” looks.

Prices range from $800 to $1300 for cribs; dressers are $900 to $1300.

New this year is a sub-brand called Offspring, a somewhat lower price version of Kidz Décoeur. Offspring features GREENGUARD Gold certified nursery furniture that is simpler in styling than the main line (only three finishes, three collections at the moment). Cribs run $560 to $700 and six-drawer double stroller at $900.

How’s the quality? We were generally impressed with the line—the one-inch thick dresser tops as well as self-closing drawers are good signs. It was odd at this price point not to see corner blocks on the drawers, however.

Overall, we would recommend this brand. At these prices, Kidz Décoeur competes with Romina (who probably has them beat when it comes to solid wood construction) and Natart (a fellow Canadian company that offers more high style). But Kidz Décoeur does deserve a look if you are in that price range. Yes, the Offspring sub-brand is a bit more affordable. Rating: B
