SOL_LEVI_MAINFYI: Beco has decided to discontinued this carrier and has removed it from Beco’s web site. It is still available for sale on some sites online, sometimes at steep discount.

Web: BecoBabyCarrier.com

Price: $65 to $140

Weight Range: 7 to 45 lbs.

Comments: The biggest trend we’ve seen in baby carriers lately has been a move toward higher weight limits. The Beco Soleil is an example of this trend. The Beco Gemini 2 has a weight limit of 35 lbs. but the Soleil allows toddlers up to 45 lbs. (roughly 5 to 6 years of age) to be carried. Another difference from the Gemini 2: the Soleil only offers three positions. That’s right, you won’t be able to use this carrier with your child facing out; it’s only a front (face in), back and hip carrier.

As for features, the Soleil offers a chest strap for more parent comfort, padded crossable shoulder straps, built in headrest, an ergonomic seat with padded leg supports, buckle closures, a hood and a pocket. For $140 that’s quite a few useful features.

Overall, parents liked the Soleil although the buckles came in for some criticism. Parents seemed to have a hard time disengaging the buckles (but that’s a plus with older kids who won’t be able to surprise you with an escape attempt). Overall, parents preferred the Gemini 2, but if you want your carrier to last into toddlerhood, the Soleil is a carrier to consider.
