we're waiting until the baby is born to find out if it's a girl or a boy, which will definitely influence my selection of car seat fabrics... Do you think it's ok to put the baby in a marathon for a few days until we get the seat after the baby is born? If I'm in the hospital long enough, DS could get the seat while I'm 'relaxing', but he's pretty bad at installation, so I'd want to do it myself.

Do you have someone you could borrow an infant seat from for a few days? The hospital may give you grief over not having an infant seat, even though it is safe. If not, the SafeSeat is really easy to install, especially if you have LATCH. I would bet your DH could do it. Also ask at the hospital - ours has a CPST on staff and they can check it for you.

But I'd also be going for cheap...I had no problem puttng my girl in the black and red SS1, because it was only 99$ :D
