I know we're not the only ones to get phone calls where is says something like "unknown number" or just a city/state & I have to tell you it's driving me nuts. I mean we don't get a ton of them but maybe a couple/few times a week. Sometimes I don't answer but this morning I got one from "Clifton, NJ" & the number was 973-253-0908. I answer & no one is there & then it just hangs up after a few seconds. So I decide I'm going to call it back & I get a recording saying the number has been disconnected. I don't get that? How can someone call from a disconnected number? I mean I called back less than 30 seconds after the call came in. Does anyone have any insight on that? :13:

I don't know how it is possible to get a call from a disconnected number, but I am a big fan of reverse 411. I go on that web site whenever I get a call from a number I do not recognize. The number you posted was listed as
"(973) 253-0908 Type: Land LineProvider: VerizonLocation: Passaic, NJ."

I might call my phone provider and ask them about this, or you could try to call verizon and ask them since that is what 411 says is their provider.

Thanks Ilana, interesting info. I might do that....call my provider I mean. Just to see what they have to say about it. It's annoying that's for sure.

Are you a part of the "Do Not Call" Registry? I registered our cell phones and our land line, and the amount of calls like that has decreased. Sometimes when caller ID shows up with something like that, I pick up just to say, "This number is listed on the Do Not Call Registry. Are you aware that it is therefore illegal for you to be calling?"
I really like doing that. :)
Here's the website:
https://www.donotcall.gov/
Once you're listed, if you do get a call and the number shows up on Caller ID, you can go back to the website and file a complaint against the number and the agency that called you.
It's awesome. :)

We have a calling card we get at Wal Mart for our long distance service. When we make a long distance call it comes up as unknown caller. Sometimes it gives the city but it is for GA and we don't live anywhere near GA. It might be where the connection number for us.

It could be recorded campaign calls - we're starting to get a few of these...

It's a telemarketer. Apparently, you're not alone:

How frellin' irritating!!! :31: What's the point of the Do Not Call registry (which we're on by the way) if they find all these loopholes to get through?!

The Do not call list only last 5 years then you have to reregister. It started about 5 years ago and if you signed up then you are off the list. MIL fell off during Thanksgiving week and she got 20 calls the day before Thanksgiving. We went online and put her back on that day.

We're on the Do Not Call Registry and still get these calls.

There was a story in the LA Times recently about it too - http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-consumer25nov25,1,5051137,full.story?ctrack=1&cset=true

Not true. Congress established that it wouldn't be pushing for the expiration pending further 'investigation'.

I like this website http://whocalled.us/
you can search for the number off of your Caller ID and if other people have entered that same number, you can see who is calling.
