Admin, I'm not sure if this is the right place, so please move if there is a more appropriate place, thx!

My DD18mo has a terrible cold and is getting really congested at night, so it's been suggested that I get a humidifier. The only thing is I've heard conflicting things between warm air and cool air. Any suggestions on preferences or models that have worked for you? I don't want to spend an arm & a leg, but I want something that works.

Thanks in advance for all your help!!!

We have the second Vicks humidifier on this page: http://vicks.com/humidifiers-info.php

I got it at Target for about $30. In fact, I liked it so much, I went back and got a second one to have on-hand for my second kiddo (or when we might need it in our room).

What I LOVE about it is that it doesn't require a filter and it's super, super easy to clean. It comes apart in two steps and you can clean it in your sink in less than five minutes. Sooooo not the case with the ultra expensive bells and whistle one I got from Bed Bath and Beyond.

We put about two capfuls of the Vicks menthol liquid in the tank and it really seems to help (I also happen to love the way it smells) :). The girls call it their "dragon mist".

We have the same one (actually, two of them) and love them.

Definately stick with cool mist. We had a warm mist one and DS2 was burned on it and then it started smoldering and melted. We had luckily just turned it on when he reached for it so it wasn't at full steam and he just had a little 'sunburn' on his hand.

I know that many people think they can be safe around a warm mist one, but it is very hard to watch them every single second. You need to put it in the middle of the room unless you want a wall covered in condensation and so it will most likely be on the floor. At least one other member here had a vomiting episode in the middle of the night and while they were cleaning up their DC was burned on a warm mist humidifier.

We also got the Vick's - I think the 4500 on Marisa's URL and are really happy with it. I have to clean it with vinegar once a week, but it feels like I can really get it clean (okay- I'm paranoid). You can also put one of those menthol vapor discs in a slot on the side (normally they go in the outlets in the wall) in if your child is sick.

We also have the Vick's. It's actually going in DS's room right now! I've only used it one other time, but so far I've been pleased. Really easy to clean and use.

HTH!

Thanks for the great advice on the humidifiers, looks like I'll be making a trip to Wal-Mart where they have a good return policy!

Thanks for being such valuable resources to our community!
