Is it possible that some babies dislike the hard infant mattresses? I think my son might. Does anyone know if softer mattress pads/covers exist, and if they are safe?

You can always put a mattress pad under the sheet (especially a quilted one), if your mattress is really hard. But remember, if you can sink your hand into it (really soft adn cushy and like adults prefer), then your child's face could sink into it and cause sufocation (SIDS). Heres something funny...I was so worried that all of our crib, bassinet, and PNP mattresses would be too hard for my DS's comfort and bought soft mattress pads for each of them (not very safe!). As it turns out, he sleeps better on our firm sofa cushions or a blanket on the floor (which is hard) than he does on the softer surfaces!
