View Full Version : Hypoallergenic crib mattresses -- necessary or not?

I was all set to get a Sealy coil spring mattress (the one recommended in BB), to go with the new crib that my mom is planning to purchase for me. Of course mom offered to get me the mattress (she insisted), but decided that I shouldn't be getting this mattress, as it's not hypoallergenic.

Which leads to my question: is this an important issue, or is this something that's been played up to scare new mothers? I don't really buy into the whole antibacterial thing (as far as I'm concerned, regular soap is just as good!) or plan to wash my baby's clothes in Dreft (according to BB, the perfumes alone may cause more harm than do good).

In fact, I find myself feeling that my mother is being suckered into the whole "harmful to baby" conspiracy. Should I be concerned about a crib mattress being hypoallergenic? Or is the $60 Sealy coilspring mattress perfectly fine? Any advice welcome!
