Subject: Important Infant Bedding Information

Dear Juvenile Products Retailer:

JPMA is pleased to announce CPSC determines traditional infant bedding does not cause death.

In response to a JPMA request, CPSC Health Sciences staff conducted a careful review of data from November of 1995 to January of 2004 and concluded there were no deaths directly related to the use of traditional crib bumper pads, infant blankets and stuffed toys in infant cribs. This clarifies confusion over whether suffocation incidents are caused by such products.

Please visit the JPMA website at www.jpma.org for a copy of the complete CPSC letter. Feel free to contact the JPMA office at 856-638-0420 with questions.

Thank you.

After reading the fulltext article on the JPMA's website, it's hard to deduce any conclusions from the press release. The "letter" clearly stated that this investigation EXCLUDED any deaths related to SIDS, which is usually the primary concern when being cautious of fluffy infant bedding. In essence, only a dozen or so deaths in the last 10 years were contributed to suffocation in infant bedding...but that is aside from the thousands of deaths due to SIDS. Hmmm....does this change anything?

I'm surprised the letter was posted to the website's front page when a disclaimer on the bottom said that this physiologist's views "have neither been reviewed nor approved by, and may not reflect the views of, the Commission." What does that mean for us?

Thank you for posting the article, but I truly wonder whether this changes any of the safety precautions parents need to take when buying, displaying, and using a complete infant bedding set.

Please keep us posted as to any new rules/recommendations that the Commission fully backs. :)
