We are a last-minute trip to MIL's house this upcoming Thursday. Problem is that they haven't yet bought a crib, and since we'll be there for 10 days, it doesn't make sense for DS to sleep in a pack-n-play. He needs a crib.

Happily, MIL has decided to go out and buy a crib. Since we need the crib in less than a week, our only option is the Babies R Us near them. Can anyone suggest a good, basic (but nice!) crib, available at BRU? It will probably only be used a few times a year, but since DS is the first grandchild, it should last through future grandchildren too.

Any suggestions?

TIA!

If I recall correctly, BRU had several nice cribs for under $200. How much did you want to spend? You can get a Jenny Lind for $109, less if you can find a coupon.

Also Walmart carries a few cribs. I've never seen one put together IRL, but there was a thread a few weeks ago praising them. I think it was the Graco Aspen. I saw it last time I was at Walmart and it was a very decent price. A link to the thread http://www.windsorpeak.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=6&topic_id=9807&mesg_id=9807&page=

If you don't want to have to invest in an mattress too, I would suggest the Cosco Portable Crib from BabiesRUs. Our guy has one in our room and his regular big crib in his room. The mattress it comes with is firm, it takes Pack n Play size sheets but it is a crib. Baby does not sleep on or near the ground. I've been pleasantly surprised with how sturdy it is and we've had no problems with it. Our guy is big too, over 28 inches at 6 mos and 18.5 pounds. The reviews on amazon/target.com were generally favorable. We've really liked it. It is about $80 including the mattress and has never been recalled or had any official safety complaints according to the CSPC.

We're all set now. MIL decided that she wanted a full-size, sturdy crib, rather than a portable crib, since she is hoping to use it for future grandkids too. She bought the crib yesterday.

Unfortunately, the first 4 cribs she chose at BRU were out of stock, so she ended up spending more than she wanted to, but she ended up with a beautiful Simmons crib. (Ironically, it's probably better and more expensive than the one we have at home for DS, and ours is is very nice, IMHO!)

Thanks for your suggestions! :-)

Erin,

glad you got a crib!
we had this same issue with my mom, but we had a bit more time to work it out. i did some research on http://www.craigslist.com for what people were selling in her area, and we ended up with a 1 year old crib for $80! she only had to go about 10 miles to pick it up, then bought her own mattres. it has worked great for our DS and will be available for any future grandchildren (which she hopes are many!).
