We live between two cities and were trying to avoid buying two cribs. Obviously , if thats the best and safest option we will do it but I wanted to see if anyone has used the Pack and Play as crib and for how long this is possible. We will need something from 0-9 months...
Also, is there any difference between the various models in terms of quality or is it just about the fabrics/ appearance etc?
As an alternative since we dont have a size limitation, what are the best (nor necessarily most attractive) inexpensive cribs to look at??
Thank you!

I don't see why you can't use a pack and play as your primary crib. If it were me, I might look for a matress to fit it other than the one it comes with. I've heard of mattresses for pnp's (probably here on these boards) and I know you can buy custom made mattresses on the internet. But I'm sure it's fine without a spiffy new mattress, too!
As far as how long you can use it, I can't help you with personal experience (DD isn't here yet.). But when my mom had a day care in the home this was all they slept in. The kids slept in pnp's until they were about 3ish and could sleep together in one room on cots.
We went with what the BBB recommended and got a Graco. We decided we didn't need all the bells and whistles, so we registered for a less expensive model.
Good luck!

I have a full-size Arm's Reach co-sleeper that we now use in the "playpen" mode as a crib. In playpen mode it is very similar to the Graco. However, I wouldn't use a different mattress...I actually bought a separate portable crib mattress to use in the co-sleeper, but in playpen mode it is too small. There are gaps on the side the baby could fall into...uncomfortable if not downright dangerous. I do have a crib wedge, though, and that makes it more comfortable for baby. He is 8 months old and has been sleeping in the bottom portion for 1 month. It's working out OK, except it is hard to keep him covered because you can't really tuck the bedding under the mattress. I live in Wisconsin, and we will get a regular crib before next winter. But I digress...
I think you would be fine with a Pack N' Play for 9 months. Baby can sleep in the bassinet part for at least 5 months and will be fine in the the bottom part for a few months after that.
